no way with an unprotected zipper

-------------------------

I'm looking for one that opens vertically, as opposed to horizontally like that one

No. At least, not the zipper.

Maybe bag the camera within the Op-Tech pouch. Or get a rain proof pouch such as Billingham. Or put camera in a small Pelican. Last, maybe get one of those rough and tumble camera models and forgo a pouch, but live with somewhat compromised results. Olympus has it's tough series.

I saw one model with these features, cut and pasted.

Features
4X wide-angle optical zoom with fast f2.0 high speed lens
Waterproof to depths of 50 feet, Freeze proof to 14 degrees F, Shockproof to 7 feet, Crushproof to 220 lb.
RAW capture, Live Composite, Underwater modes with Underwater HDR
Wi-Fi / GPS / e. Compass
1080P HD video

Update: After more thinking, and more looking, I ended up buying an RX100 IV of my own.

I bought a little Lowepro Tahoe 15 II case: http://store.lowepro.com/tahoe-15-ii. It's not waterproof, so I'm going to put a sandwich bag in the front pocket to put the camera in if it starts raining.

I plan on attaching the case to my backpack or climbing harness. To prevent dropping the camera down the mountain, I've fashioned a short tether with a bit of tubular webbing which will attach to the camera and some part of my gear, harness or pack. It's webbing for climbing, tied with a water knot so it can also be used as a runner in an emergency.

I'll know in a couple months if this works at all.

Really curious how it works for you, as I find I love been able to zoom quite a lot while photographing climbs but I too hate the bulk.

Excellent camera though I would also consider the Nikon Coolpix AW130 which is waterproof down to 100 feet, has RAW capture, and includes a built-in GPS and digital compass to automatically geotag your pictures.

I love this camera. Took it out for the first time yesterday - drove out to Mt. Baker to snowshoe up to Artist Point. My goal was to snow camp on the ridge but the overnight weather forecast was updated for heavy snow + high-ish winds so I bailed.

I brought it and my Canon gear, it was awesome being able to shoot stills while my 6D was shooting a time lapse.

Wanted to resurrect this thread as i am on the lookout for a RX100 IV for climbing/everything. Have you taken it to do any technical climbing yet? How is the one handed operation? I want to be able to pull it out at a stance and use it one handed, or at belays with my brake hand still on the rope, etc. I had a RX100 (can't remember if it was original or II) but it didn't last long as I dropped it in a river while skiing. Ooops!
