p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Chernobyl & Pripyat, Ukraine

My wife and I are travelling the world, taking pictures while we do it. We were Kiev near the end of October, and made a trip up to Chernobyl and Pripyat. We spent two days inside the zone taking pictures, you can read more about this visit and see more pictures, about our trip here - http://2ontherun.com/2015/chernobyl-and-pripyat/

I've included a couple pictures below, as usual, any comments or criticism are welcome.

1. Posters left inside a theater in Pripyat.

2. "Urban Decay" inside the secondary school. Open to the air, and years of tourists, some of the hallways end up looking like this.

3. Gymnasium building. similar urban decay

4. Monument erected for the people who have died due to the accident, next to the damaged sarcophagus (building in the background) that currently encases the damaged reactor. (Not seen, but to the right is the new containment building that will be rolled over the current building, and lowered down on top of it)

5. A lone claw, used to help cleanup. Twenty feet away it is safe with normal background levels of radiation. A hands-width away from it, and it's roughly 100 times more radiation then background levels. Inside the claw, radiation levels are 2000 times background, unsafe for even a short period of time. A tool, left as a reminder.

It's worth going if you are interested. Though I would do a multi-day over a single day trip. You get a nice amount of time to look around and see things, with a much more relaxed schedule. Kiev is also quite interesting and inexpensive to visit, so take 7-10 days and do both. You could go now, and see snow in Pripyat, which is something we were hoping for.

Nope, if you stay in the clean areas. Our full article has some pictures of the dosimeter stats (http://2ontherun.com/). Background radiation in Kiev is about the same as the levels around Pripyat, 0.15 microsieverts/hour, and the same in other major cities. There are hotspots, which is why you have a guide, who knows where the big ones are. The Claw emits 17 microsieverts/hour if you right up next to it, and approximately 300 if you were to place a device inside it. 3-25 microsieverts/hour is the what nuclear power plant workers are allowed (http://chernobylgallery.com/chernobyl-disaster/radiation-levels/).

There are also some rules about not putting anything on the ground, don't step on the moss (it's accumulates the dust more), and we go through monitors when leaving the zone.

Overall, if you pay attention, stay in tested areas, it's not any worse than a normal city. Stray off into the uncleaned forest, or decide you want to go see the inside of some buildings, and you will need special clothing and equipment.

Hope that helps.

Very awesome! I was in Kyiv twice this year and highly regret not making the trek north, I've always wanted to go here.

ITakePhotos, why not go back and see Kiev and Chernobyl this year.

Thanks for the comments.

Matt, the pictures are great, and this is up there in my 'would-love-to-go' places.

Also, thanks for providing the extra information, adds far more to just the photos.

the photos are great! Three years ago I also visited that place. We used radiation Ecotest Group detectors for measuring radiation. I even bought one for home. I'll never forget that trip. I think that radiation is one of the most dangerous things for us, 'coz even in tiny doses radiation can cause serious diseases.

Nikt, you should make plans to see it sooner rather than later. My feeling from being there last year, was that it was both getting more popular, and becoming overgrown.

NaddyFl, thanks for the comment. It's important to remember this is less devastation, and more nature (and vandals) clawing back the city. The devastation is the fact that no one can live there anymore.

Kellyon, Thanks! We didn't carry a detector, but our guide did. We were lucky to be in a small group of three tourists, a guide and a driver, so I wasn't that concerned. Thankfully I haven't started glowing in the dark, or growing an 11th toe since my visit!
