Awesome price for the Canon EF 24-70/4 L IS in Canada at the moment: $850 CA (that's about $635 US).

I'm in.

Here'e my favourite Canadian enablers. In alphabetical order.

Atlantic Photo Supply (APS)
Camtec
Henry's
The Camera Store (TCS)

*If* the Fed raises the rates in the US to 1% this year as promised and the central bank of Canada goes negative on overnight rates as suggested we will sadly witness another fiat currency bite the dust. RIP CAD 2016 - please send flowers.

And if it snows any more today, I may have to use a shovel. And this is on Vancouver Island, not in Nova Scotia.

Yeah, it's getting weird. We set a new all-time high temperature in 2015 for 24 December, and in 2014 for 25 December. In most recent years, we don't see any significant amount of snow until February, and then it just keeps on coming.

Alas commodity based currencies like the CAD and AUD are dead for a very long time as long as China stumbles. And although painful it's a good thing to wean these economies off their dinosaur dig it up thinking. Maybe now they will try to invest in other areas and make their own countries strong, not China.

We'll be back as soon as the price of oil goes up. Not that I think that's a good thing, but it is a thing.

In my area of the Netherlands there hasn't been any snow in nearly 3 years. We also keep setting record after record (high temperatures especially, and rainfall). Our last Christmas was closer to summer than winter temperature. Which is sad, because I like the scenic opportunities of snow and ice. When I was young this occurred a few weeks a year, later on a few days a year and poof ... it's gone.

Yes, $500-600 sounds about right for such a kit zoom, also given the current going price of the 24-105.

Much of the developed world outside the US may get strong price increases. If the Fed dares to seriously raise rates (without more QE etc.), I doubt much 'buying power' remains for the average American consumer, given that much of that buying is on credit and not cash. Interesting times for distributors of consumer technology gear ...

Makes it particularly difficult for the Elfstedentocht, a.k.a. the Eleven Cities Tour. A Frieslander friend of mine (now from Rotterdam) completed this many years ago (probably '97), which was one of the few times it's happened in recent history.

John,

How much hassle was it getting across the border and did they charge excise tax?

Thanks,

Robert

I didn't actually order it; I just wanted to know what they were going to charge. This was with Atlantic Photo Supply, and the difference in price over retail was all shipping (like $107 some such CA$).

In response to OntheRez' question:

Camera Canada ships using Canada Post which transfers to USPS and normally arrives in about 3 days.
Based on my previous experience, no tariff/excise tax were collected by USPS.
I have read reports that UPS and FedEx charges brokerage fees which may be substantial

BTW: Canadian rebates will end tomorrow Jan 7.

The correct price is what people are paying for it, not what we think it should be.

Yes, very unlikely that this will happen again. Although currently there are huge (10-15 degrees C) temperature differences across the small country, the North has some snow and ice while nature over here thinks it is spring.
