p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 70-200 II and TCs

I'm getting ready to move to a 500 for my wildlife lens coupled with my D750, possibly D7200. I need something for the in between ranges. My first thought was to offer for trade my 70-200, but I use it a lot for landscapes, so I don't think that would be a wise decision.

Next thought was a set of TCs. Given that I'm picking up a 500, I'd automatically get a 1.4x. Not sure about the other two.

Another thought That has crossed my mind was just adding the 80-400, since it is only slightly more than the cost of all 3 TCs.

The Sigma 150-600 and Tamron version are both out.

Anyone willing to share some thoughts, opinions or ideas?

200-500 Nikon. Great lens that will fill the gap in the two lenses you have.

How often do you currently use 200-500 is the first question. Second is are you willing to carry the 500/4 whenever you might need 500 ?

If the answer to those is 'Rarely' and 'Yes' then you don't need an 80-400 or 200-500. If it's 'Often if I could' and 'No' - then the 200-500 might be a better bet than the 80-400 which I hated with TCs but was superb as a walk around without.

Personally I'd just add the 3 TCs - you will want at least 2 for the 500 anyway - and use them on the 70-200.

I use the range often enough to want it covered, but when it's used is mainly wildlife, so the 500 would get priority there. When I go out, I either need the 500 or don't. Portrait shoot or out with the kids, don't need it. Waterfowl - it would always be there.

My concern with the 200-500 is focus speed. I've not really considered that lens because the one constant I see is the slow focus speed. Unfortunately, I don't have anywhere to test it though.

I use my 200-500 on both a D800 and a D7200 with no focus speed issues. Check the forum thread and see for yourself what people are doing with it. Most who complain about AF speed are usually in one of two categories; those shooting in very low light conditions or those who are just looking for something to bitch about.

The 200-500 doesn't focus slowly in general, but does focus slower than something like a 70-200/2.8 VR II or big prime, which is what a lot of people compare it too. There are plenty of head-on action shots and BIF shots with the 200-500 to be found online, it's totally fine for most stuff. It also has an AF limiter which helps. I would suggest renting it or take it outside at your local camera store and see for yourself if it will be suitable.

^ +1 I'll add a third category (and probably the most populated) "never had one in their hands"
If one can shoot butterflies, dragonflies, and hummers in flight...the AF is anything but slow.
Camera settings as well as long lens technique play a huge part in acquisition. Just sayin'

Re: the OP's query...the Nikkor 70-200 f2.8 VR II takes the 1.4's and the TC-17E II quite well.
