I have been using canon for the last 10 years, but want to try Nikon

I have question to those who still shoot with Nikon 500mm Old VR II not the new FL series, which Nikon body gives best result in term of sharp focus and clean ISO ... i need to choose one of these, also if anyone suggest in combination with TC14II where it fit the best in these bodies?

Nikon D3s
Nikon D800
Nikon D750

Thanks for your feedback

I use it with the D810 and am more than satisfied with the results.

i use both the D3s and D800 with the 500 VR and i am happy with the sharpness and focus on both bodies, the D800 sometimes really shocks me with the speed of aquisition but the D3s is no slouch

for fps and clean iso and almost limitless buffer though, D3s all the way, and i find the D3s an extremely comfortable body to hold, but (there's always a but), the 12 mp really limits what can be done when i work the files from the D3s and D800, the D800 produces beautiful files that can be cropped compared to the D3s but again, fps and buffer is real pain on the 800, i have numerous times fired off a sequence of shots and then lost shots cause of the length of time needed to totally clear the buffer

here's a couple shots with the D3s on my last outting, LR defaults for noise removal only (bigger versions of the pics in the 500mm thread)

iso 11,400

iso 12,800

the D800 just can't touch those iso's

if i could have just a few more mp in the D3s it would be the body i die with

the D750 i have to idea about.

I use it with a D810 and might also use it with a D750 which has the same AF module.
I recommend the D810 over the D800 because it's AF module is faster and more accurate.
I also recommend the TC-14eiii instead of the older eii version.

I have never used the D3 but it's obviously a pro caliber camera with surely the image quality to go with.

.

the quieter shutter of the D810 over the 800 also is sweet, specially for skittish birds

lots of nice shots there

i should also add that the high iso's i was talking about comes in handy for me, lots of dark cloudy days but if the iso's can be kept down then the D800 rules

Thanks All ... wonderful info ... I will seriously consider either D810 or D3s ..... from the all posts above I feel D810 is best combining with ISO/FPS/MP ... as no single body can fulfill all above .... Appreciate all info

It is a fantastic lens, and of the 'old' nikon super teles, the easiest to handhold which I do about 98% of the time. I also think it is a bargain these days, with the pressure from the 200-500 on the lower end, and from the newer versions on the high end. It costs about half what the new one costs (at msrp). As far as a body goes, I've teamed the 500vr with a d3, d3s, d4, d750, and d810.

Khan! Wassup?? So, you're giving the 'darkside' a try
I recently picked up a 500 and have been pairing it with a D810.
Nothing but great things (and keepers) to say about this combo.

The D810 indeed is an awesome camera capable of stunning images. However, if you ever think you will need ISOs of 6400 or more, pick up a D3s or a D4. AF speed and fps coupled with high ISO ability make the D3s or D4 hard to beat.
