I have the Kenko DGX 1.4
Anyone with experience on this combo using a 7DII?
How about with Canon 1.4 teleconverters?

There are many versions of Kenko TC's. I've found a older MC4 was horrible at AF, while the newer models of the Kenko Teleplus PRO 300 DGX 1.4x AF Teleconverter are fairly good, but do not work with some lenses.

Personally, I'd get the Canon MK II or MK III and be future proofed. The Kenko TC's have a nasty habit of not working on newer cameras and lenses.

I have since found out that the canon 1.4 II or 1.4 III works with autofocus.
Anyone have experience with either on on the 100-400L IS v1 and 7DII ?

I used to own a very sharp copy of the Canon 100-400L IS and have tried it with a Kenko Teleplus PRO 300 DGX 1.4x AF Teleconverter on a Canon 7D body. The auto focus worked but was slowed down. The image quality was not so good and I found it better to shoot without the 1.4x and crop the images.

My experience is that the 1.4x TC III will multiply any weaknesses or faults of the lens you attach to it by 1.4x, and that is all. By the same token, the positive attributes of the lens you attach to it will remain constant. Using the TC, the effects of a minimum aperture of f/8 on AF, ISO and shutter speed will also be commensurate with the performance of the lens you attach.

I have used this combination. It degrades the image to some extent as you would expect. The thing that drove me nuts was the autofocus. Saying that it will slow it down doesn't begin to describe it. It was like I mounted a whole new lens on the camera, and to be frank...it just sucked. It works, but it does not like the TC on that lens. I was fairly disappointed. I really like this lens quite a bit, and use it a fair amount. With this said, it is one of the worst lenses that I own with a TC.

If you are using a tripod you could try live view AF. I found my 70D to be surprisingly fast with live view AF with my 100-400 v1 + 1.4x3. Not viewfinder fast but fast enough for standing or perched wildlife. Make judicious use of manual prefocus and the limiter switch. Note, my 100-400 v2 live view focuses noticeably faster. Since the 7D2 has the same dual pixel sensor as the 70D, its live view AF should work equally well. I have to smile at saying a 7D2's AF should be as good as a 70D's.

I've used the original 100-400L with the newest Sigma 1.4x teleconverter before. I had good results, but ended up getting rid of the 100-400L in favor of the 120-300. For me, the extra stop or 2 was more important. I never noticed too big of a slow down in AF speed, but I was on a 1D. Image quality was pretty good, and with the low megapixel count of the 1DIIn, using the teleconverter was more ideal than cropping in post.

Here's an image with the 100-400L + 1.4x on a 1DIIn:

I have a 100-400 v1 and a 1.4x II TC and they work fine together on my 7DII.

Then there was something wrong with your TC. Cropping does NOT give better results than using a TC.

A few shots with a 2x TC, on tripod. Not the sharpest, but still better than cropping to get same size final image:

You can get a nice used Canon 1.4 II for $225 , and a Canon 1.4 III for $350. Kenko's are iffy at best.... you can't go wrong with a Canon.
