p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · D610 or D750 for my AI-S glasses?

I've been thinking of going back to DSLR after 2 years of shooting film, RF and mirrorless only as I miss shooting with an SLR viewfinder.
Currently have a FM2 and F3P to keep me happy along a 50mm 1.8 E, 28mm 2.8 AI-S, 135mm 2.8 AI-S and also have a 28-50 3.5 AI-S and 50mm 1.4 AI-S on their way.
Now I'm looking to compliment my lenses with an inexpensive FF digital body.
From what I've gathered, my choices for under $1500 are the D610 and D750. Not interested on the D800 series as I don't care for 36MP.

I have no plan acquiring AF lenses anytime soon and only pro that the D750 has versus the D610 is better DR and tilt-screen.
Should I spend the extra $500 for a D750 or should I just be content with the D610.

My plan is to use this for general/landscape photography.
Will also have a M240 with 28mm and 50mm to keep me happy

You could consider the Df.

Df is a possibility but for how much it is going, I would rather get the d750.

had a Sony A7 and Sony overall feels more an electronic device than a camera, plus i prefer shooting OVF than EVF

If you are going to do tripod work, then the D750. If you are hand-held, then the A7RII.

That's my setup - anything candid/handheld with my MF glass (Nikon, Leica, Voigtlander) and the A7RII is clearly superior due to IBIS and . On a tripod my D800 is the way to go.

Though I see you wanted and inexpensive digital body, which leaves out the A7RII (unless you get a great deal on a used one).

$1500 will get you a clean Df, just watch the FM classified ads.

You would enjoy shooting Ai-S lenses on the Df, it's just a perfect fit, IMHO.

Just wondering, when using a tripod, why do you prefer the D800 over the Sony? Why not just use the Sony all the time?

The older lenses optical shortcomings will be less obvious with lower resolution cameras and so I would agree that the Df or even a D700 would be better choices than a D610 or D750.

Starting in 2008 when Nikon released its first full frame DSLR camera it has also had to update its lenses. Most recently this has been the case with the new 24-70mm f2.8 VR lens that is in response to the higher resolution D8xx cameras that are more inclined to show the shortcomings of the 24-70mm f2.8 non VR lens that was also released in 2008 at the same as the D3 camera and the 14-24mm f2.8 lens.

Elkhornsun, the optical shortcomings of AF glass over Ai-S lenses does indeed become more obvious on high res sensors. I keep seeing how bad my AF lenses are on my girlfriends D800 where my manual focus Nikkors are perfectly sharp and even appear to outresolve the 36 Mp sensor with ease.

CA can, in most cases, be fixed in PP. Sharpness and double lines on OoF elements can't be fixed in PP. YMMV

Taemo, between the D610 and D750 I would pick the D610 because it does not have a tilting LCD and feels slightly more substantial then the D750. Both do feel a bit light and small to me.

I had high expectations with the Df but to me it was a disappointment, not close to my philosophy of pure photography and quirks with the body design.

Anyhow, I just snagged a D610 w/ grip, extra battery and remote for around $850, hoping to test it next weekend.

I'd say neither......I have a few manual focus lenses and they're not as fun to use on my D750 than on my D700......the bigger viewfinder makes all the difference! I'd say get a used D700/800/810/3/3s.....etc....

what causes "the optical shortcomings of AF glass over Ai-S"?

it seems odd that Nikon would downgrade their glass quality over time, esp. since they are adding better coatings, etc.

I don't see much point in the D750 over the D610 for MF lenses, or for AF lenses unless you really challenge the AF system, which is great on the D610 but better on the D750. That's assuming you shoot raw - if you shoot JPEG there might be some advantage to the newer processor, but the sensor is basically the same. I shoot with a DF and personally prefer that sensor to the higher res version, but to each his own on that...

Some of the first AF lenses used optical designs taken from the E series lenses or otherwise simplified designs rather then the more sophisticated Ai-S optical designs because the AF mechanism needed space not available with the Ai-S designs.

Newer AF lenses are mass production items rather then hand ground and hand assembled lenses. I can just go by what I experienced and sample variation will play a role there but on a D800 I experienced that a lot of the older lenses show off what the sensor is capable off in terms of sharpness where quite a few AF lenses show significant weaknesses. Not only in the image center but towards the edges as well.

The latest f1,8 and f1,4 primes, the PC-E lenses and some of the latest f2,8 and f4 constant aperture zooms seem to be the first step ahead from the Ai-S lens designs. Everything from the 1980's until this latest generation of lenses seems to be compromised designs compared by what I can get out of Ai-S glass

my understanding is that computers are controlling the grinding machines to tighter tolerances than a human hand can obtain these days

the only AF-D lenses I have/had were rel. spendy ones and they seemed fine

the AF-S lenses I've used also seem fine - the 24-85 D610 kit lens is remarkable for its cost, not the best overall

I mostly use my Ai-S lenses for special purpose work - Micro indoors, or taping the aperture wide open on the fast 35 and 50s

- what do you think about the AF-S lenses alone - and high cost ones vs. lower cost ones as vs. the Ai-S?
