Ack, reading this thread is making me want to get the 24mm 1.4 again. Waffling between it and a 24mm 1.8G instead, to save weight but sacrifice bokeh for environmental portraits...

I have owned (and sold) two copies of this lens and miss it! I know their is a weight difference but to me the difference is nominal. (Mind you I'm shooting with a 200mm F2VRII regularly so a few grams doesn't bother me much)

More than weight to me it comes down to drawing style/preferences. The 1.8 is a bit sharper than the 1.4 (but I thought the 1.4 was sharp on my D800E), and the bokeh is better on the 1.4. For the price difference new id buy the 1.8 in a heart beat... but with used prices in mind I'd pick up a 1.4 (circa $1,000 used in mint condition).

Come back to the G side

Still love mine. I actually sold the 24G in favor of the 28E...
Eventually got rid of the 28E and bought 24G again... It's an amazing piece if glass.
Bokeh character is the best when used at close distances...

Elijah, for your uses, do you find yourself gravitating more toward the 24 or the 35? I have a 20/35/85 combo right now, but considering adding the 24 1.4 or 1.8g and then using a 24/35/85 or 24/50/105 combo instead.

Iíve said this multiple times on this forum, 35mm f/1.4G is my MOST USED lens, period.
58G and 35G share the same love though, I like them both equally but use 35G the most because of its versatility.
Iím fact, I could get away from not using the 24G completely if I had to.

I do 35/58 for getting ready shots (and mostly indoor shots) and 35/58/105 outdoor stuff (sometimes triple D750 simultaneously)

Iím actually in a process of getting a Leica M10 and my first lens purchase will be the Summilux 35mm f/1.4

Awesome shots Elijah, can I ask what your lighting setup is here? How you achieved sharp subjects but motion blurred lights in the background? Dragging the shutter? Second shutter flash?

Thanks!

Triple light setup, made a triangle setup somewhat equally spaced by eye, all lights point to the center of the dance floor.
If ceinilgs are white and low enough for bounce, my fourth light is on camera TTL while all other settings completely in manual.
Usually I drag the shutter at 1/15 or 1/20 and just pan fast while dragging the shutter.
As you may already know, flash freezes the subject, therefore anything thatís lit will be sharp while ambient will have motion blur.
I do a combination of drag, sometimes both X + Y axis drag or simultaneous X + Y + rotate camera drag.
You just have to play around with the dragging, sometimes you get amazing results.
When I slap my zoom lens, the dragging game goes even further; I zoom in and out while panning and rotating the camera, all at the same time.

Those shots become gold and stand out from the audience

Elijah, you've sure got the lighting down for those reception shots, it's a lot of work, not easy but you nailed it. But not just technically, you were also able to artistically capture the emotion of the evening.

hey guys, i have the 24 1.4g as well and i use it at dancefloor, sometimes i have low keeper rate as this lens is slow to focus and the 35 is even slower according some youtube videos focus comparison...so how do you shoot on the dnacefloor?
I mean 1.4 is almost never spot on, so to increase the chance i have to go for 2.8 and more...but here for sure the 24-70 wins in focus speed... so i am wondering...
sometimes i belive, my 24 is bad, as i purchased it second hand...sometimes even at f5.6 i have blurry pictures...

hmm?
