Photographer and equipment doing well after fall into lake.

After taking my first few photos at the East Pond of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge this morning I realized there were a few phragmites that were getting into my shots. I walked out to adjust them and the next thing I knew I saw my tripod mounted camera falling toward me and into the water. I reached down trying to grab it and the mud under my feet gave way and I went down as well. I got up and lifted my half submerged camera, lens and flash out of the water. All this commotion spooked the snow geese and they blasted off. With water pouring off my rig I thought this would be a good way to find out if things were working so I composed and took this photo and a bunch after.

For some reason I forgot to transfer my battery pack from my belt to the tripod leg and when I walked away from the rig the cable pulled it over.

Thank you Nikon and Sigma, your equipment is quite well weather sealed.

hope your gear is ok buddy, best hing to do is take out the battery right away, and get all gear to a hair dryers, )not too close, and not too hot) Must be dried out inside and out., it might work for a while, but if there is any water in there, your asking for trouble!

Now that was a frightening few seconds I bet. Hope it all continues to work for you.

It probably would have made for a good commercial.

Thank you Ray,

Completely dry inside battery compartment, CF slot and mirror chamber. It's all disambled and sitting open to dry thoroughly. I believe all seals held so it's only the outside which I've wiped down with a wet cloth and then dried with a soft terry cloth. This is the procedure Nikon recommends for salt spray.

This is the third time I've had a camera under water and all have worked fine after drying.

Nice to know you were not hurt Morris. The gear can take some beating judging by your account

Thank you Leighton,

I wish someone was there to shoot video of this crazy incident. It must have been a sight when I was panning with the snow geese and the water was pouring off the camera and lens.

Thank you Sritri,

The lake bed is probably softer than a mattress. It was a warm day again so I was able to shoot for about 3 hours after this before I started to feel too cold. That was when the wind came up.

Glad to hear it wasn't as bad as it could have been. On the bright side, you have one of those 'stories' to tell now.

Happy New Year!

Sheesh, I go out of town and look at the trouble you get in to!
Glad everything seems to be fine with both your gear and most of all you. Reminds me of a story of a photographer by a waterfall....wait....that was you too.
That's what you get for going to the Conrad Tan school of photographer and equipment disasters. He would be proud of you .
Be safe over the New Year....I suspect wife and son will be keeping a closer eye on you for a bit

Wow, what a bummer. Did the air turn blue around you? Glad things seem to be okay. Good to know 'cause I have a Nikon/Sigma combo, too.

Happy New Year

Oh Morris. First so glad you are okay. Second glad your gear appears to have made it as well. Hope there are no surprises down the road.

I'll bet those few seconds watching the gear fall felt like a lifetime.
