p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Kodak Tri-X Emulation

When my Father was still alive he habitually used Kodak Tri-X film for his photography and I always liked the results that he produced; it was only later that I realised that some of the great photographers of all time also used Tr-X. In this digital age I would like to replicate as far as possible the Tri-X 'look' in my B&W work. Can anyone please recommend a digital emulation plug-in or App that gives a close approximation to the Tri-X film? (I have LightroomCC, PhotoshopCC & Affinity Apps if it helps) Thanks.

VSCO has a Tri-X simulation, though I don't know how close it is to reality. There's one in Silver Efex Pro as well. Silver Efex is well worth the money, so I'd lean that route.

there is also DXO Filmpack 5. I've always liked their results. How accurate are they? who knows

Here's a quick comparison of the Tri-X simulations from VSCO and Silver Efex.

First, the Sony specific profile from VSCO, which isn't so good...for some reason they never have enough contrast with the Sony profiles. Note that with all of these, you can reduce or eliminate the film grain added.

But here's the VSCO preset with the 'standard' profile, which seems to work much better:

And here's the Tri-X simulation in Silver Efex Pro 2:

That is an incredibly useful comparison, thanks Jman13. To my eye the Sliver Efex Pro version wins hands down.

Here is a conversion comparison for two competing products interpretation of Tri-X.

The first one is from a preset collection called X-Equals : https://x-equals.com/blog/xequals-bundle/

The second one is from Nic Silver effects.

As you can see even from these web images, the tone curve applied for what each one considers a simulation of Tri-X is different. I added a gold toner look to both, as I don't like perfectly neutral gray looking b&w files, because they never printed perfectly neutral on silver paper (always something added tone color to silver prints, developer bromide etc)

The X-Equals:

The Nic Silver FX:

Just for fun, the color interpretation:

I have an album on flickr called 'Harvest' shot exclusively on Tri-X. Also, getting your hands on some prints of images shot with Tri-X can really help you see the grain and what's going on.

10,000 kilometres away I have hundreds of contact sheets and thousands of Tri-X negs waiting for future printing or scanning.

I have been recommended another app called TrueGrain by Grubba Software, (http://www.grubbasoftware.com). I have done a quick run through of two images which seem to me to be quite impressive.
