I noticed that filter announcement making the rounds yesterday.

Does it have a brass ring and the nonocoating?

No other data available at this time.

Most likely aluminum alloy ring. Coating is WP most likely in the so called nano coat family.

When lens filter threads were metal and metal-on-metal could result in binding brass filter threads were important. Nowadays most lenses have plastic filter threads and brass is not as indispensable as it was once.

Very true, right up until the time you use step-up rings or god-forbid, combine filters.

I use a lens hood for protection and it does not ever negatively affect image quality.

Sure, but hoods do nothing for horizontal projectiles. However, I cannot think of many situations when a hood plus the standard B+W glass filters are not enough. Maybe the military could use them.

I have noticed a few plastic ones, but I thought that most of the better lenses still used metal threads.

I had a bunch of them recently. Damned 35-40kt winds with sand and debris, followed by ice storms at about 75-80° angle. The ice was accumulating on the inside of the hood. Fortunately I was able to use the Lenscoat Raincoat to keep the rest of the lens/body from being blasted, but I can't say the same for my poor face.

I was at the Michigan City IN lighthouse when superstorm Sandy hit the east coast. Winds were coming down full fetch of the lake and waves were p;ushing 15 feet and more. Trust me. I had a UV filter on my lens. I had sand in my sholes, embedded in my socks and my tennies were sandblasted white again.

Yes, those are seagulls. Extremely strong fliers.

This technology has been available since 1986 courtesy Montgomery Scott .... why they've suppressed it and kept it from the masses, who knows

That is correct; however, the particular 1986 that you cite has not yet occurred.

Is anyone able to comment on the actual water repellency of these filters? I'm hoping for a way to keep raindrops out of my photos without having to hover about with a rocket blower.
