The 85II is right up there in the "stellar" glass range for me as well. I've owned the 85mm none "L" and the Sig 85 and I still love the 85II over them all. Now.. that being said...the Zeiss 135 F/2.0 ... well... it's the best glass I've shot to date. I'd love to give the 200 F/2 a try....

Enjoy the 85II it's a wonderful lens.

I hope one day i can shoot with 85L to see why it gets that whistles then, but because i have 135L and 300 2.8 maybe then i won't feel that much big wow or mind blowing, sure i will like the bokeh and results out of 85L, but i doubt it will give me much wow factor over 135L or 300, and i want to try Canon 200/2L too to see, sure that lens will slap both 135L and 85L due to its longer FL and wide aperture, there is also 200 1.8.

At the end, i can't come and say "Holy Cr@ap, Zeiss 135 is the greatest lens ever" it is one amazing killer lens, but "the greatest" is a very strong word to be used for a specific lens yet.

FWIW, for many years, I had the 50/1.2L, 85/1.2L II, 135/2L, 200/1.8L, and 300/2.8L IS. Now, I have only the 50/1.2L, 85/1.2L II, and 300/2.8L IS. The 135/2L and 200/1.8L are excellent lenses, but I almost never used them, since getting the 70-200/2.8L IS II.

I agree, i didn't use that 135L since so long time ago, but i know i will not use 85L or 50L much either, i am a landscape photographer and a sports photographer, i have 70-200II, so like you, i don't use much any prime lens in that zoom lens range plus 50, i have Canon 85 1.8 and even this i don't use much in sports regardless how good it, i have 50 1.8 and 50 1.4 just as collection, i bought a lot of gear in the past and end up using less and kept the rest just to show off my collection.

If i were you i won't sell 135L, and that 200 1.8 i may replace it with 200/2L, but to each his/her own, i just don't sell great lenses no matter what until i buy something as replacement, i will not sell my 300 because i will buy 150-600 or 100-400II, and i didn't sell 135L because i have 70-200II, one day i may use that 135L for its worthy, i always choose primes for fast focus and sharpness when i shoot dedicated portraits, looking at all my photos from all lenses i have, primes are winners over 90%, while with zooms it is nearly 70-75%, even if i use the best zoom, and i wasted a lot on primes and zooms so i am not that so easy getting rid of my gear even if they are collecting dust until as i said when i buy the better replacement/upgrade.

The 85 L is like a boat. The happiest days of your life and when you buy it and sell it (the latter because you are getting so much money for a lens you ended up not using enough to justify the tied up capital)

By the way, the greatest lens box is the original 50 1.8.

All this talk of the greatest lens ever, and not a single picture to back it up.

:sigh:

The problem here, is that I never claimed to be a good photographer.. I'm not. I'm a noob actually, and I have a LONG way to go.
BUT: I know good glass when I shoot with it.

I shot with it a bit today.
I have to say, (and I'm prepared to be VERY reasonable about the "flaws" of the lens)
Not once did I notice any fringing or optical issues (no doubt there are some, if you enjoy looking for that kind of thing)
Not once did it not nail focus on my intended subject on the first try..
Not once did I think to myself.. maybe it's not that good after all, and I was just excited by a new purchase..

85 is a bit long for me.. That's the only thing about it that doesn't suit ME perfectly.

I continue to be impressed, mostly by it's rendering style, but also it's showing itself to be much more versatile than I thought it would be. It works for things other than portraiture..

Again, I don't claim to be a photographer is any sense of the word.
But, that said..
Here are a few from today.

Nice photos. Glad you love the lens as much as many of us do. It is a fantastic piece of kit that just keeps on giving. I have said for years that the only reason I would upgrade is if they 1) found a way to reduce purple fringing like they just did with the 35L II and 2) made it weather sealed. The focusing speed has never bothered me either, nor has the weight.

You have a good eye for photographing candids, which the 85L excels at assisting with. Don't let the negativity of some of the folks around here discourage your photography.

The 85mm f1,2 L II is a fantastic lens. It is worth the trouble (the cost, weight, slow focus..) When I shoot it alongside the 70-200 f2,8 II it constantly has better contrast, colours and sharpness...oh, and bokeh too. It produces much softer backgrounds at f2,8 than the zoom at a similar FL and at smaller appertures it just shines. I had the Sigma 85mm for a couple of years but this one is simply better. You can check some sample photos from my last wedding preview- all the telephoto shots are from this lens:
