Just wondered about a good starting point for shooting christmas lights and windows showing lit christmas trees inside ?

The good starting point here is choosing the right time of day to do it. Try blue hour instead of later at night.

I agree, blue hour is better or you get something less visually interesting.

Here's one after the blue hour... ISO 200, F8, 6 sec. Start somewhere around there and fiddle with your settings till you get the effect you want.

Or maybe do two shots and at different exposures.Thing is to get the inside Christmas tree your almost invading the privacy of the home as well, so maybe just the outside lights.
