Welcome to being a wedding photographer in 2015! Speaking of FB, wait until you share your beautiful images, and the bride and groom still use a crappy blurry dark cell phone pic as their profile photo hahaha.
In all seriousness, the situation you described happens. A lot. While I don't have anyone regularly knocking over my equipment, it's almost a guarantee that when you're taking any sort of photos, family members and guests will want to take their own images. They don't realize they're being really distracting, but they are. I've found the best way to handle this is right after I organize a group shot, I stress to them "ok, just look at me, don't look at (and I point to the dozen cell phone people behind me) and we can get this shot in 3 seconds."
It takes getting used to. No matter what, you don't want to cause a scene and flip out (even though you probably want to). Nothing looks worse than a photographer bitching out loud with other people around. Take everything as a learning experience. Some things you just need to get used to.
