p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Well here it is

Tomorrow is my first "you are the photographer" wedding.
Bit nervous.
But I have to say thank you to each and every person who contributes to this section. I have learned so much from replies to my posts, private messages and just reading almost every post dating back over 4 months or so.
You all have not steered me wrong and I am so very grateful.

To those of you who post your work, thank you so very much. It has inspired me, given me thought as "How did they do that?" "How would I do that?". And just flat out makes me want to be better.

A special shout out to Mike Villa and Tony Hoffer. I really do enjoy both of yours work and style.
Another special shout out to Glort. Man the gems you post up, the stories you told and the trials you go through. You have been both a teacher and an inspiration. There will always be a cold one in fridge if you happen this way.
To all the rest of you, once again I say thank you.
-Michael

Enjoy the ride....

Just remember to smile and wave .... smile and wave.....

or another little saying I like .... "You are part of the show but your not THE show."
Keeps me humble, but also reminds me I have to step in from time to time to help guide the B&G. Because they do this once where we have been in many weddings.

Have a good shoot manana!

I hope all goes well for you. I was SO nervous on my first official wedding even though they knew it was my first.... it didn't take away the butterfly feeling. It eventually went away, but it took a while.

Time it's over you'll be saying " Well that wasn't so damn hard after all!"

Take charge, run your part of the circus like you have been doing it forever and have fun with it as well as making it fun for them.

My first wedding was so far back i can't even remember it.
Matter of fact, I can barely remember the last one and it wasn't so long ago.... they are all a blur.

Come to think of it, I should go check my diary to see when my next when is, can't remember that either nowdays! :0)

Don't know how many times i have spoken to a couple and told them I have never been to that church before then on the day I rock up and think "Oh yeah, been here at least 7 times before"
I can remember the place, just not the names of them.

WTF

I can't believe Mike hasn't logged on mid-wedding to let us know how it's going.

He must be over 25 years old.
Then again, some people i know that are over 50 Cant sit down to a meal without photographing it or posting a new selfie every day! Don't even get me started on that!!

Maybe Mike's like me. Has a phone that makes calls, receives calls and lasts a week on one battery charge. You can't use it for web sites which is fine because I cant see them on anything less than a 15" screen anyway.

Seriously. We have affiliations with Homeland Security. We'll pull stuff off your camera and out of your brain if we have to.

LoL to the above. Yes I am above 40 and good lord I was tired when I got home!!!

Everything went well for the most part. I brought way more stuff than I used but had it just in case.
Of all things you wont believe what I left sitting on my desk.... Batteries for my flashes!!! Luckily I was able to run down to the store and pick some up at outrageous prices. Oh well lesson learned.

I did run into one issue that I need some advice on.

Set up for the formals in the sanctuary. Had my brand spanking new(to me) Godox's set up as key and fill with a Yongnuo 600 acting as rim. Putting this out there so you will know that I have a bit of investment in getting this horrid light looking good.
Well, just about after I got done doing the groomsman and began setting up and positioning the bridesmaids, in comes the family and cousins and every other person that owned a smartphone.
They literately shoved passed my wife and assistant who were trying to do door patrol and started taking snaps.
For the most part they were staying out of the way and I was trying to keep the peace...... oh yeh here it comes.... but when my stand holding my brand new Godox went over I kind of lost it. I sat my camera down and grabbed the groom and as politely as possible... informed him that he was paying for this shoot and it was being ruined by his family. He had to escort the family out so we could continue.

Everyone seemed OK with it and the light suffered no damage. But even as I sit here I still cant shake the feeling of being used. And it gets even worse as I am hearing of all the wonderful shots the family is posting on Facebook. OK I'm just going to say it. Thats my damn lighting and my damn poses and sweat that went into getting that to look right!!!! GRRRRR FRIGGIN FRAGGLE RABBLE...... Ok breathing deep and calming down. Sorry guys and gals I just needed to vent.

This kind of thing ever happen to you all? How did you handle it? Advice for next wedding?

Thank You
Michael

Welcome to being a wedding photographer in 2015! Speaking of FB, wait until you share your beautiful images, and the bride and groom still use a crappy blurry dark cell phone pic as their profile photo hahaha.

In all seriousness, the situation you described happens. A lot. While I don't have anyone regularly knocking over my equipment, it's almost a guarantee that when you're taking any sort of photos, family members and guests will want to take their own images. They don't realize they're being really distracting, but they are. I've found the best way to handle this is right after I organize a group shot, I stress to them "ok, just look at me, don't look at (and I point to the dozen cell phone people behind me) and we can get this shot in 3 seconds."

It takes getting used to. No matter what, you don't want to cause a scene and flip out (even though you probably want to). Nothing looks worse than a photographer bitching out loud with other people around. Take everything as a learning experience. Some things you just need to get used to.

I caught myself. Not known for having the best temper in the world but in that nano second that I wanted to explode I stopped, calmly walked over and picked the light stand back up and made the comment "Takes a licking and keeps on ticking!" The gentleman that knocked it over knew he had messed up and you could hear a pin drop as everyone waited to see how I would react. One of this moments that seems to take an eternity but in reality was maybe ten seconds..
I kind of feel bad asking the groom to escort people out, but it had gotten to the point where I was tripping over people and the shoot was not going to be able to happen.
