Shot from my seat at the Bulls vs Suns game Monday.
Gallery- https://schlacter.smugmug.com/Sports/Pro-Sports/2015-12-8-Bulls-vs-Suns/

I don't shoot the pros but once a year or so, I was surprised at the lighting level:
f2.8 1/800 ISO 5000-6400. To me, I thought the place could have used 1 stop more lighting and thought many of you other shooters typically get more light in your arena than this game?

A bakers dozen, shot from my seat:

Could have had something to do with your distance from the court. In the arena where I shoot NBA, I go with ISO 6400, f/3.2, 1/1250.

Great Set! May I ask what setup you were using? Lens/Body? And where your seat was? I feel like you may have been able to get away with 1/640 and bump the ISO down! However i could totally be wrong!

Russ,
So at your arena Courtside, you are 1 stop faster.
While I know light intensity falls of as a square power, I am confused. I haven't observed this before, out on a field or on a court. On a field, when consistently lit, I get same exposure of the player whether 5 yards or 50 yards. In this example, my distance to the right side basket would be shorter than you shooting the far court from one baseline. Do you notice different Exposure from near to far court shooting?

Not sure how to explain it?

I was using a 7dii + 70-200 f2.8ii.
I used IS Mode 2.
Started with single point, then moved to Spot because the edges of single point were grabbing background or other players.

My thought process....
I don't have very steady hands and have seen handmhead/foot blurred at 1/640 so I opted to hedge and use 1/800. I had wanted faster (more / at least like what Russ posted) but didn't want to average more than ISO 6400. (actually, I did a lot of pushing in Post because most shots were around ISO 3200. I had some EC dialed in, and yes, I looked at Histogram, but I guess it was the bright reflections representing the high histogram side, and not the uniforms, like I thought, I got stuck pushing most in Post.

What is strange is that the arena light and EV level (someone else messaged me his arena is same values as I got) is lower than professional football stadium lighting by about a stop, even though they are so much larger.

That's the same light I get at a DIII gym and amazingly bad for a pro stadium. I'm surprised.

You might want to take a look at your white balance. It seems to vary over the set of photos you showed.

The lighting just makes it sooooo tough. I shoot in my school gym about 3-4 times a week and the lighting is just garbage and and this reminds me of what I deal with I am forced to use 640 because the 1D3 just wont let me go above 2500ISO without looking ultra grainy and it makes it so tough to freeze action to my liking. I am planning on purchasing a 7D2 in the next 2 weeks and im hoping that I will be able to help myself out when shooting basketball and volleyball. How far have you been able to push the ISO before it becomes unusable? Have you experimented with flicker mode? These circumstances are also the reason why I regularly choose to shoot with the 85 1.8 over any of my lenses that are a stop slower. I have direct access to the court (as close as one can possibly get without being in bounds) so generally 85mm which ends up being 110mm is plenty to work with.

As you can see, on the 7dii, 6400 ISO is IMHO is much more usable than the original 7D.
Also, not all ISO 6400 is the same noise wise for the same scene, it is more about the EV level.
IE: noise & grain on ISO 6400 f2.8 1/800 is much less than the same scene under lower lighting conditions needing ISO 6400 f2.8 1/50 ss. (you can see the second example has 4 less stops of light).

Anyway, in the gyms, if you properly expose, or ETTR (expose to the right), ISO 12800 is still usable at web size. I probably last year posted some boys basketball at 6400-16000 ISO if you want to search after May1, 2015.

As far as focal length, for the school aged boys, I typically sit 3 ft behind baseline under the net and use a 24-70 f2.8ii. I would find 85mm way to long, and f1.8 way to shallow for the under the backboard shots. The 70mm is decent out to the free throw line.

Your totally right! Once they get past the free throw line, i switch over to a 24-70 2.8 or a 35 1.4. The 85 is far too shallow which leads me to shoot between 2 and 2.4. Im planning on buying a rokinon 14 2.8 and im super excited to see what images that produces when used from behind the net and when paired with a PW!
