p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Blue Steel - NYC Financial District

I took these shots a couple months back on a super clear morning. I woke up early hoping for some passing clouds but as we all know that's not how it always works! I ended up with two exposures that I enjoyed and thought I'd post them here for some feedback and to see which one was more enjoyed by the masses. Any and all C&C are appreciated!

I like the composition of the first Brock. In the second the buildings seem a touch sharper and I love the deep blue.

Thanks so much for the comments everyone! They were fun images to take - waking up on the other side of Brooklyn at 430am and riding a Citibike to Pier 2 only added to this adventure!

Clouds usually add interest but I like the clear sky. Both are great. Was your exposure really 211 seconds on the second shot?

Thanks for the comment! I agree that having clouds would be helpful but I took what I got on this day. Yeah the exposure really was 211 seconds. I had tried a couple shots with the Little Stopper and if I remember right that was somewhere around 20 seconds but they still showed some slight texture in the water. I then switched to the Big Stopper and wanted to keep the aperture around f14 resulting in a 3min 31second exposure which took all detail out of the water.

I haven't had a chance to try a smooth water long exposure photo yet. I didn't think it would take that long to smooth the waves but I guess it also depends on the surface texture of the water. I'm always learning something.

There's nothing wrong with a little learning! You can see in the first photo there is a different texture to the water than in the second; its 16sec vs 211sec. I could have stopped up to f8 and the exposure time would have decreased by a lot. I also may have gotten the same water effect with an exposure around 30-60seconds but again I would have had to open up the aperture which I was trying not to do.

If you get into shooting long exposures like this of course you will need a 6 or 10stop ND filter and I highly recommend at first using an app like NDCalc to help you nail exposure times without wasting too much time toying around.

I like the atmophere of the second one ... it's all polished and so quiet looking, but it feels like a city emptied of its inhabitants ...

Thanks! It's funny you mentioned the empty feeling - this is generally a very popular place to take photos and yet on a saturday morning I had the place to myself.

Thanks for the comments...I think #2 is the winner with a close second place for the top image.
