An obvious competitor to the Tamron/Sigma 150-600mm lenses By making the focal length range not as short (start at 200mm rather than 150mm), they are able to eek out an extra 1/3 stop wide open. Hopefully, it will reasonably compete on price as well

If it is an L lens, 3000+ can be expected. However, I like the idea of 200-600 zoom. I might get one for myself.

Canon probably sell it at half price of that already pricey 200-400mm F4L

Hmmm...imagine such a lens with IQ as good as the 100-400 II, and is compatible with a 1.4TC...

Those, but also Nikon's new 200-500E VR; that lens has shown up the third-party zooms quite nicely, and despite the obvious limitations and increased price, the Nikon guys are eating it up.

If there's a Nikon market for a competitor to those lenses, then there most certainly is a Canon market too .

The nikon lens isn't grossly expensive either. I shot it on a D800E it's a pretty good lens for the price.

If this does come in at a price similar to the Nikon 200-500 and has optics close to the 100-400II then this could easily replace the 100-400II for many people. And if it did have optics close to 100-400II then I'd have no issue with it being priced in the 100-400II territory. 600 f/5.6 and maybe the ability to use the 1.4TC for 840 f/8 would be very welcomed. Will have to wait and see if this ever materializes.

Those bastards! I just bought the 100-400ii a year ago!

I'm guessing $3,500. It NEEDS to be as sharp and contrasty as the 100-400ii.
They wouldn't build a non-red-ring lens this long, would they?!!!

It was about time that Canon made a move... i am surprised that they acted so late in the race ( i guess they didn't see it coming ) i wonder how many Millions they lost being so late . I hope that they wont go BEZERK on the price like the Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS. If the price is right and the IQ i'll gladly ditch my Sigma 150-600 S

5.6 at the long end is really important rather than 6.3 as in the T&S combo. I have the Tamron and it can struggle with AF at 600. It should be a killer lens if the weight can be kept down.

Just as Nikon, with their 200-500, went after market share with the Tamron;s & Sigma's 150-600's, Canon is jumping in with their contender.

5.6 at 600mm will likely add weight, & cost above the Nikon's $1,495; so it's closest competition will likely be the Sigma 150-600-S.

I'd guess the price to be slightly above the Sigma "Sport", but "close enough" to make it competitive, at around $2,500?

Agreed! (I've been trolling the Nikon thread, among others)

For those that are comparing this potential lens to the 100-400L II; don't.

Neither the entry level third-party supertelezooms nor Nikon's 200-500E are 'pro' grade, weather-sealed lenses, and Canon would do well to slot this lens in below the 100-400L II without a red ring. Like Nikon's lens, as compared to their 80-400G, it'd likely be a step back in build quality, AF speed, and absolute optical refinement, as 200-500E doesn't have some of the coatings that the 80-400G does.

Canon may strike a different compromise, but they'll need to meet or beat Nikon's price point, as any higher in a non-pro lens and they're too close to the 100-400L II, and any higher as a pro lens and they're too close to the 200-400/4L.

It is a patent announcement, not a production announcement. Big difference.

Great though if it does materialize at a reasonable price.

For a number of years there have been many people wanting a reasonably-priced f5.6 500mm prime or zoom. Canon simply ignored this gap in the jump from 400 f5.6 to 500 f4 price, size, and weight-range. With everyone slapping 1.4x TC's and 2x TC's on 300mm & 400mm lenses, you would think they could have figured it out.

If I had Nikon gear, I would currently be going with the Nikon 200-500mm.

There are many that will pay more than the 100-400 II and less than the 200-400 f4, if the quality and IQ are there.

I have a 70-300 L gathering dust and hopefully my 100-400 II will be doing the same soon!

+1 That's exactly what I was thinking. Make it an L grade and price it smack in between those two lens options. If you want the same speed but more reach, you pay for it. If you want less reach but faster, you pay for it.

600mm at f5.6 has got to be a pretty large front element. I can't imagine this is going to be light or inexpensive. Love to be proven wrong though. If it's an L series then I would say it's going to be ~$5000 minimum.

I don't see such a lens going below $3K, in my opinion.

I could be wrong, but I'm guessing $3-4K.
