Glad to see this lens in use with the 1D IV. Have any idea regarding focusing speed compared to 100-400mm II zoom with tele 1.4 Brimull?

Regarding the autofocus on the 400 DO II with the Canon 1.4x III extender: It is superior in every way to the 100-400 II with the same extender. I have both. It makes sense since these combinations are f/5.6 vs. f/8. OTOH, the 100-400 II with the extender has a better minimum focusing distance if you need to get in close. IQ is similar and I can't discern much difference.

Hey guys, I'm getting a double pair of eyes when focused in on a BIF using my 7D2 and 400 DO ii. I started a thread on it. Anyone else getting this?

A bit late to the party, but here goes!

I took my 400 DO II out for its inaugural run yesterday. I'm still in a walking boot from a torn muscle in my leg, so I was a bit limited in what I could do. Really, it was just nice being out after 5 weeks on crutches!

The lens is great, but I'd really like to be able to test it with my 1.4x III which is at Canon for repairs right now (back next week though!). I already have the 100-400 IS II, so I really don't have a need for 400mm, at least not what I paid for this lens (though Camera Canada really came through for me with the pre-Canon-price-increase price since I was on the waiting list so long). My interest is really in the 560/5.6 as I think that would make a fantastic travel/BIF lens. On several recent work trips (on planes) taking my 500/4 v1 was just too big and/or much of a headache. If I'm going somewhere to shoot for a week the 5-hundo is great, but the 400 DO II + 1.4x would be so portable as to make bringing it anywhere a snap. I'm sure I'm not telling anyone anything they don't know already though.

Great AF job, Dorian! When the bird is flying low, the water surface could easily grab the attention of the AF sensors.

I'm having more time to explore the video quality of the 7D II + 400 DO II + 2x III combo.

Here's a 30-sec practice footage at a butterfly foraging at some flowers (viewing the 1080p version recommended).

Shooting info - Bacnotan, La Union, northern Philippines, July 3, 2016, EOS 7D MII + EF 400 DO f/4 IS II + EF 2x TC III, 800 mm, 1/125 sec, f/16, ISO 320, manual exposure in available light, 455B tripod + UBH45 ball head, 1080/59.94p capture.

Processing - slomo at 20% of real time, no grading (SOOC video), original audio replaced with music, watermark and dissolves added.

After receiving a new 7d2 due to focusing issues, I took the 400DO2 out for a test with the new body.

Very happy it is delivering once again as it should. I was worried for a moment that it was the lens/converter combo and/or fault with my 400DO2, but extremely happy to report that it was just a bad camera.

What a great lens..

Spotted Pardalote

ISO 10000 (I wanted to push the focus hard) (Yes its super noisy, but was a test)

Lovely pose and excellent eye contact. Surprisingly good IQ for a wide open shot with a doubler and ISO 10K, Tim!

When I saw this immature bird foraging at a flowering vine along Bued River (northern Philippines), I tried to get close openly, on foot. I couldn't get nearer than 10 meters, as that seemed to be its comfort distance before it got frightened and flew away. I had to use my vehicle as a blind to get closer. It worked.... the bird acted as if I wasn't there at all, and 560 mm was long enough to fill the frame.

The 7D II's excellent AI servo AF allowed pinpoint focus placement on the active forager, while the light and compact 400 DO II + 1.4x TC III made shooting from the tight confines of the driver's seat very convenient. This bird is only 114 mm long from tip of bill to tip of tail, but the 400 DO II's MFD of 3.3 meters is good enough to get full frame captures.

I chanced upon this little dynamo yesterday while it was feeding at a fruiting tree, just after some heavy rains.

Pere, I love that Sunbird shot........a beautiful bird, and your picture does her justice.

Here's one of a very few of my shots with 1.4XTC on 400 DO II, done last year, and I hope I haven't posted that one before in your thread. Heck, I can not even find any pictures done with 2xTC now because I shot so few of them.

Thanks, Pare.

I haven't seen that PIF shot of yours before.... excellent detail and control of the HLs.
