p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Tokina's sub $1000 f2.8 zoom caught my eye. My review of the new Tokina 24-70 f2.8.

I recently purchased the new Tokina 24-70 f2.8 hoping to get a cheaper version of the famed 24-70 zoom range in f2.8. Unfortunately I had to return the lens because although it exceeded my expectations in regards to image quality (it was better than my old Canon 24-70 f2.8L), the damn thing just would not focus quickly enough in less than ideal light, even on a bright day using the center focus point of my 6D, the lens would hunt for 3-4 seconds. Maybe I had a bad copy? but dang I was really hoping to get a nice 2.8 zoom for sub $1000.

I wrote a review on a photography how-to website I help run, if anyone else is interested in purchasing this lens, think twice or at least try to get a copy that focuses.

Thanks for looking! Let me know if you've used the lens before and don't agree with me, I'd love to try it again if I really did get a bad copy that didn't focus right. The sharpness and colors from this lens are amazing though.

I have the Tamron 24-70 F2.8 and use with a 5Ds - it focuses fine...

I used this lens with a 5D3 and it focused fine.

Sharp, IS and F2.8...for less than $1k - good value

I am updating my post because I did not know that Tokina made the same range zoom F2.8 without IS...

I have not used the Tokina..only the Tamron

IS? Am I missing something, or maybe you're speaking of the Tamron lens?

The Tamron has been universally acknowledged as a great lens. The Tokina... If the AF performance the OP is describing can not be amended somehow, Tokina has another DOA lens on their hands, and it will be this way until there is a breakthrough in the AF department.

what is a DOA lens?

I never had any problems with Tokina's 16-28 or 17-35 zooms...sad to see the 24-70 have this issue.

Let's not jump to conclusions. Like the OP said, maybe it was a bad copy. You can't draw any conclusions from one data point, and thanks to the OP for the post. Bottom line, if for whatever reason you want to get the lens, make certain it can easily be returned.

By the way, I got an early copy of the Tamron 24-70, and used with my 5D II that copy had inconsistent and slow auto focus. I chalk it up to an early production run.

Right, that's why there's the following clause in my original post: "If the AF performance the OP is describing can not be amended somehow..." Faulty copy was my first thought; a possible firmware update the second; but the exterior of the lens with the apparent ancient "focus clutch" does not inspire confidence; most brands (Tamron, Sigma) have given it up on newer lenses in favour of an ultrasonic focusing mechanism with full-time manual override that doesn't require mechanical kludges like that. It's all the more weird since the Tokina 70-200/4 that predates the 24-70 is apparently using a fully modern mechanism...
