Hi guys,

this is from a recent beauty test shoot. Very simple lighting, 1 yongnuo flash in 80 cm octabox in front and slightly above the model.

For those interested in the skin retouching, I have the entire workflow recorded:

I don't find this beautiful at all, but I do find it plastic looking. She looks more like a manikin than a human.

Why not share the original photo without all the post processing.

I probably wouldn't go as far with the skin as you did, but your video was really nice and the photo is very nice, if that was what you were going for. Thank you for posting.

He did. Watch the video. Season to taste.

His point wasn't claiming processing just as you or I (or even he) might prefer. He was sharing technique and ideas.

I like people who present possibilities and teach me... almost as much as I like people who stick their finger down their throat and get excited every time they can call plastic skin.

He wasn't looking for critique. He was sharing information.

Thanks, OP.

Thanks for your views guys. It is interesting to see how sensitive the topic of retouching is.

High End beauty is simply a commercial art form where perfection is sought after in the skin, so as not to distract the viewer from the makeup stuff they want you to focus on.

Yes, this retouching would be an overkill for standard portraits, which the image wasn't meant to be.

I love it. Only thing for me that's wrong is it's too red on my monitor.

On the other hand, there is this thing called marketing. Show me a final product that looks like plastic skin that is clearly over-done, then why would I bother with the video if the video is going to get me to a final product that looks like plastic skin that is clearly over-done?

There is also this thing called communicating your intent. If the OP was not after a critique, then he should have said as much and put the video first, not the picture. By putting the picture up first with the conditions used for lighting, the post implies critique ... the video and the words used to introduce it were almost an afterthought.

Just a critique on your original post: You may wish to be more clear what your intent is. If you had given the above information in your original post, you would have gotten much more positive responses. There are lots of posts here in the people forum and most are showing images looking for feedback.

FYI, the impression I got from the original post is as follows:

"Hey, here's a cool picture I took and did this cool post processing technique, what do you think?"

followed by:

"Oh, by the way, here's how I got there if you are interested."

Just saying.

Beautiful transformation. Some of the most sophisticated retouching techniques I've ever seen. One of the neat things is that all of the adjustments are on layers so they can be "dialed back" to satisfy the most demanding of the "warts and all" school of portraiture. PLEASE keep showing your retouching videos.

Nice work, from the title knew what to expect! Like the lighting and the processing and don't feel that it's at all plastic. Suitable to commercial beauty work.

I gave up on the "skin debate" a long time ago. Small web images hardly show the details a large print would. IMO....

Thanks for sharing the information and I enjoyed the shot. Nice lighting.
