p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 100-400 II: an unsung BIF champ

I have gone thru all of my 100-400 II BIF shots today, and I regret not having used the lens more often. Nevertheless, I've shot enough BIF with the lens since I got it 11 months ago that I can say the new zoom rocks even for BIF photography application.
I think its only "limitation" is the nominal aperture of f/5.6, however, that "limitation" results in two key strengths of the lens: low weight/size and relatively low price compared to the "big white ones".

The lens feels totally at home on my 1DX, 1DsMkII and Rebel T6s. Alas, it doesn't work too well on my 7DMkII, but then again, no lens does because my camera has some sort of a bug.

Please post your BIF pictures taken with 100-400 II, so that we may try to convey its goodness-for-action-shooting to those who either do not own 100-400 II, or the lens owners who perhaps have not used it for much BIF shooting yet.

Here's a few "warm up" BIF shots of mine taken with 100-400 II and diverse cameras as shown in each image caption. All of the shots were done at 400mm FL.

When Canon gave the 100-400 two rings my drool factor increased tenfold and saving's for it started in earnest It's now in refurb which is closer to my price range but with images posted, it's not difficult to see paying full price!

Nice shooting gentlemen!

My 1DMkIIN is whispering 'we need that red ring' to my 1.4x MrIII and I'm hearing a faint 'okay, glad to help'! They seem to play together well

This next one flew a few minutes later so I decided to post it anyway. For the record, this was shot with the 1.4TC v.II and cropped more than 50% before being resized for display. The 100-400 v.II continues to amaze me, even after shooting it for almost a year now.

Fine shootin', Harvey.
I see that you've got them Long tails in your neck o'the woods. Apparently they can be seen in Burlington/Hamilton in large numbers too. However, more centrally in GTA there are none so far, at least that was so a couple of days ago when I looked last.

Yeah, those are some excellent images above.

I've concluded that I most likely will get the 100-400 II after taking a CPS loaner for a spin and then re exploring the 400 5.6. All I can say is I need IS. I was shaking like a leaf on a tree with the 400 5.6 and 7D2; it may not be so noticeable with the X, but I see it being used mostly with the 7D2.

Stillfingerz, CPW has a street price of $1860. I put a "see if they bite on this" bid on Greentoe to see if I can get it even lower than the CPW streetprice. I doubt they will go for it, but hey it's the holidays - who knows.

Are any of you'll finding success with using the 1.4 with this lens?

Indeed, however good 400 f/5.6 might be, shooting with it hand-held requires a very steady hand.....the lens is quite demanding that way. However, 100-400 II is simply better in all ways except the price.

Even those who'd like to shed some "big white" load off their backs, and thus they are contemplating getting 400 DO II......my advice to them is to think about such move twice, and consider getting 100-400 II instead of 400 DO II. Remember, the Supertelephotomaster would never steer you wrong.

I have not used 100-400 II with 1.4xTC III on BIF since my initial lens tests last December (one such easy proximity/fly-by test shot is enclosed), therefore I am not experienced enough with that, besides, I do not like shooting at f/8.

What are the size restrictions or recommendations for posting photos now? On a 15" Windows laptop I'm noticing more and more that some pix are the size of the window and some are quite a bit larger and require scrolling. Is it scaling or something on my end? Some very impressive postings BTW.

I hear you. Mind you, I am getting better at adjusting the rotary zoom ``òn the fly ``.
I guess one can get used to it eventually.
Nice sharp egrets BTW.

Way cool, Harvey, IQ with the 1.4x III looks fine to me! I'll no doubt get the 100-400 II and sell my 300 f4L IS to help fund it; my 1DMkIIN will manage f8 for the moment, I'm still a bit reserved about the 7D2, for many it's killer, others not so much

I'll mostly use the 100-400 of my 1st soon to be FF, a 6D and with my 100L will be my flower/butterfly setup. It's smallish MFD is wonderful and it and the newer IS should really help chase those elusive flowers that are often too far away due to my wheelchair use.

Can't wait to get one in hand, see if it's manageable
Cheers,
Jerry

That is a good question to which I do not have an answer. I have a couple of 27/28" monitors, and they display pictures 1800-1900 pix wide with no scrolling.
I usually post pictures 1500 -1600 pix wide to start with, and then I cut them back in size eventually.

Jerry, I am going on 74 years of age and no longer have steady hands. The IS on the new 100-400 works like a champ for me.

Harvey, 58 here but for 37plus years I've been paralyzed, A C5 level spinal cord injury, I've no grip and my arms/hands aren't that steady; see my member name for my 'impressive' finger movement abilities IS is super helpful, my 1st L lens was the 70-200 f4L IS and it was my fav until I upgraded my trusty 100 macro to the L IS version.

My goal is to replace my 17-40 with the new 16-35 f4L IS, keep my 100, 70-200 and then add the 100-400 II. I may even breakdown and grab the 24-70 f4L IS to fill out the IS set, which will make this cripple

Keep shooting, Harvey, your images are wonderful

Thanks, on my desktop I see the full picture also. This is relatively new on the laptop. It's Win 7 so can't blame it on Win 10. It's just slightly annoying to be scrolling, kinda lessens the impact of great shots.
