Canon makes them sign an agreement not to publicly advertise below certain prices so the companies sell at that minimum price in ads. Many times they will sell at a lower price if you ask.

This is the reason why Greentoe.com exists.

It's not just Canon. A lot of companies do this. Apple, Microsoft, Nikon, and Nintendo just to name a few. They price protect some, if not all their products. This is why some website have the click on me link to get a price quote emailed to you. They can't legally list it cheaper but they can sell it cheaper.

It is not unlawful, nor is it a cartel.

They are "list prices" and each retailer can sell to you at any price they want.

And how many gas stations legally sell gas at exactly the same prices?

Yes. Look up Greentoe, as referenced above; good old street haggling on prices in the internet age, where inventory age and sales volume requirements actually influence what retailers will really let merchandise go for.

Sure, what is YOUR problem with that? You can list your camera on the FM Buy & Sell Forum and sell it cheaper than you list if for too, if you want.

No.

The reason is not a "cartel". It is not illegal, unethical, or even immoral. List price has been explained to you already in this thread. Please don't repeat your claim when you should know better now. Please reread the thread.

Actually, no - it's MAP regulations. We are contractually obliged to follow manufacturer's rules in this matter - or face losing our authorised reseller status.

You may be confusing cause and effect. The effect is that the resellers have the same price listed, which may be caused by a cartel, MAP agreement, or other factors.
