I used the D300s for about 4 years and I bought the D7200 after the D300s.Maybe this could help.
Basically, here are my observations.
1) The noise, at the pixel level, is about the same. So, after normalizing to the D300s size I'm seeing about a 1-stop gain. So, this translates into a 1.4x increase in "reach" or I can downsample to realize a 1-stop improvement in noise.
2) The noise falls apart gradually. On the d300s, the noise was ok to about 640, but it started to become intrusive at 800. At about ISO1250, the image was really falling apart. The image on the D7200, in contrast, really hangs in there up to about ISO3200. The noise is less objectionable(more like grain) and the saturation levels are good. The overall integrity of the image holds surprisingly well.
