Hey everyone,

I just got back into shooting live shows after taking a very long break. Any other concert photogs lurking on here?

Who do you shoot for?
Do you make your own requests for coverage or do you have an editor who takes care of it?
Favorite recent shots?

I'll start... Here's a photo I took two nights ago of Halsey @ The Fillmore in San Francisco.

Nice to meet everyone!

I can't believe all the views and no comments. I will get it started:

I like the image. I get a real feel of atmosphere from it. Love how the lights provide a great rim-lit look to the subject. Others might want to see face and eyes for connection to the artist, but I get a great sense of a hazy club and edgy music. ymmv.

Really appreciate your feedback, thank you.
And I definitely agree...if I had to submit just one photo from a show this one would probably anger the PR folks.

Hoping to see some other people's concert photos, too. I could use some inspiration.

Also curious about people's workflows. I predominantly use LR but the import and culling slowness makes me want to jump out a window sometimes.

I've posted a few concert shots in the last few months with very little interest on this forum. Just not the right place I guess. Shots of the grandkids are very popular around here.
Anyway, I think your first shot is excellent. I agree with boxcarw as to why it's good. Breaks many rules but the end result really works.
I don't shoot concerts for a living so I can't help you with the professional questions, but I do enjoy shooting concerts. Mainly because i'm a huge music fan and it allows me the best seat in the house...well, for 3 songs anyway .

Here's one of mine. Let me know what you think.

I'm actually shooting Metric in March... looking forward to seeing them live.

I love all the activity and engagement of each band member in that photo.

What's at the front of the stage? Are those fans? Leaf blowers?

You'll have fun at the Metric show. However, i think standard rule for them is only 2 songs in the pit. We all ignored that and ended up staying for 4 until they herded us out.
This pic was shot at 24mm. Get a couple full stage shots but otherwise just keep your lens pointed at Emily. She's a real rockstar and will give you some great emotion.
I can't remember what the leaf blowers actually were , but my guess is fans. It was an outdoor show in August and the temp was mid 30's so freakin hot.

Here's a shot of the drummer for Shakey Graves.

Nice shots to all I too shoot live shows and sports as well. I quit posting a few years ago because if its not some perfect 100 % set up shot the photo snobs on here ignore it... love the drummer shot that was posted! the dude is whaling on the kit

Here's one from the drummer from Kansas this summer... hard show to shoot pitch black out side and no flash allowed only stage lights..

At one time this forum was mainly just professionals and advanced enthusiast.. but with the advent of the cheap! digital SLR now everyone is a pro. lol

Are you a professional photographer? I think a lot of amateurs take amazing photographs and I welcome everyone posting here. Judgement without constructive criticism is of no value. That said, your drummer photograph would benefit from a different perspective and wider angle. Just my input.

I don't do a lot of concert photography but I aim to do more. Here are a few shots from this past Friday night. The band is called Fuzz and the show was at Thalia Hall in Chicago. I'd love feedback and advice. I shot these with my Canon 6D and 24-105 lens. I'd love to get the 70-200 2.8 IS II, but I'm just a hobbyist so that purchase may take a while.

Just an amateur here. I have tried both wide angle and telephoto, but it seems for most venues the 85mm range is quite useful, sometimes even longer.

There's times when you need to get closer to get some detail and there's the time when the band gets together to bow and you'd better get that moment.
The contrasty lighting is a serious issue and I usually set about 1 stop lower and use average metering. I also lower the contrast of jpegs in camera and shoot raw.

Wow, some excellent photos here.

mbierzyc -- that first shot is awesome! Getting such sharpness is a rarity (at least for me! haha) especially when it comes to the drummer who's usually waaaaay in the back. I love the inclsion of the guitarist.

sasho_p -- totally agree about the contrasty lighting. I usually shoot a half or full stop lower but I use center weighted.

Here are a couple from a shoot on Sunday:

Some very fine shots there Ian. # 2 is a standout for me as is the silhouette of the sax player. No critique from me as it seems you've got your shit together and know what you're doing. What gear do you use?

Thanks man. I use a 6D with 24-70 II and 70-200 (non-IS). I remember back in the day shooting tmax 3200 pushed a stop with a super slow 3.5-5.6 zoom. We have it so much easier these days...

The thing I love about shooting shows is the immediacy of it all. Everything is kind of working against you but that just adds to the fun. There's no time to second guess or get all precious in post. I'm usually culling shots in-camera during the Uber ride home and then editing photos while (slightly) inebriated at 1 or 2am to get em out the door before I have to go to my day job the next day. Fun, if not tiring, times.

Looks like the Metric singer moves around a lot and doesn't use a mic stand... two things that definitely help! And what on earth are those horse masks in the background!

Maybe this would be a good place to ask you guys...is there generally no way to get to bring a decent camera to a show unless you're actually working the show? Don't a lot of shows have rules about photography?

I tried to bring my OM-D to a metal concert in London a few weeks ago, hoping that its small size would slip under the radar (I brought the 17mm f/1.8 and 75mm f/1.8 with me) but no dice. I would LOVE to shoot a show but I don't have a body of work to show my experience in that arena to try to do it in an official capacity.

Hey Daggah,

Here in San Francisco, there are venues that don't have a camera policy. I've shot some local bands (and even some popular ones) this way to start a portfolio. When I recently shot Iceland Airwaves they didn't bother checking anyone's bags and I saw a ton of people with pro-level kits in the audience snapping away.

You could also probably reach out to any local music blogs and ask about shooting a show for them--your portfolio of other images (portraits, street photography, etc.) could serve as proof that you know how to operate a camera.

Lastly, I've also reached out to bands' PR contacts asking for just a photo pass. If you already have a ticket and you seem excited about shooting the band they don't have much to lose just adding your name to a list.

Good luck!

Man some sick, sick stuff on here. Thanks for sharing - concert photography is so hard to both capture and image for the artist as well as be a representation of showing who is actually performing. I wouldn't know who is performing in the first one, but as part of an overall set for that show, it's an amazing artistic piece. You've got some high quality work. I'm just bouncing back to photography after many years off, and now in a new city hope to explore it again sometime. Thanks for the inspiration! Keep sharing

I shot Puscifer (Maynard from Tool's other project) the other night and they made all the photogs shoot from behind a bar (of the alcohol variety) located halfway back on the floor. Strangest setup I've ever seen. Not to mention Maynard stayed in the back, inside a wrestling ring, for the first two songs and only after all the photogs left did he come out. Sigh.
