Just for fun. Subject says it all.

I love my 400 f/2.8. And with the price of the 400 f/2.8 II coming down to the low $4000 range I can't imagine selling it. Sure I would like VR but for sports it isn't a big deal. Love this lens. If you are a sports shooter this is an amazing lens.

Love the 14-24 f/2.8. I don't use it often but I can't imagine heading out to shoot landscape without it.

And you?

My top picks would be my 200mm f2 VRII and Zeiss ZF.2 135mm f2. They are on a whole different level in nearly every aspect!

The 58mm f1.4 G is another I'll never get it of. I'm not a fan of it with my D810 but love it on my DF! Its bokeh character and ability to create surreal environmental shots is amazing.

Tough one because I always thought there were lenses I would never sell. But did and will, as personal circumstances (health) and the advent of the Sony 7 series changed how I shoot.

So the 300/2.8 VRII, much to my shock & horror, will be on it's way soon I guess. I've kept the Cosina 55/1.2 through 3 brands because I love it's specular highlight treatment and it's a sharp lens, that one may last the course and is Lens #1.
The Zeiss 21/2.8 is my other much loved lens but with the purchase of the Tamron 15-30/2.8 it's seeing much less use and may eventually depart so for number 2) I'd say the Sony-Zeiss 55/1.8 which is a spectacular lens.

70-200. Headshots, landscapes, sports, it doesn't matter. The 70-200 does it well. And my Zeiss 100/2.0. Sharp, small, rugged and yet light.

Peace,

Todd

Wow Steve, those are brilliant.

Anyway, the two lenses would be the 300PF and 18/2.8D for me. The PF is sparkling, light, compact, and so easy to carry about. The 18 isn't super sharp wide open, but looks great stopped down a bit, and it is just so cool to shoot with. On the Df it's really fun to run.

Of course, I wouldn't want them to be the only two lenses.

Hmmm. I buy and sell, and buy more lenses all the time. Not sure how many Nikon mount lenses I have at the moment. I plan on selling off a few in the near future. Lenses I would never sell? My favorite Nikon mount lens is the 24mm PC-E. Right now I'd say it's the last lens I'd sell. But if my tastes in subjects change, or Nikon comes out with a better version, I will sell the current one. Really, I see very few lenses as "sacred cows."

There are a couple of lenses I have that I just don't see me ever parting with though. These are very unique, special lenses, lenses that I can't simply go out and replace if I regret selling it. My number one lens like that is my Ross Petzval lens, FL = 5 in., serial nr. 1351 which dates it to ~1845. I love this lens! It was made at the beginning of photography, for Daguerrotype cameras. If I sold it, it could be many many years before I could replace it with a lens as old (if I ever could.) I have about eight lenses made before the Civil War (1860) including a Voigtlander Petzval from 1847, but none of those are as special to me as the Ross. Another lens I love and am very hesitant to sell is my Velostigmat in Volute shutter. It's a work of art! It's a modern lens though, dating to about 1908. Still it's a favorite just because of its beauty!

Nikon 105mm 2.5 and Nikon 28mm 2.8 AIS

Love them both and not worth enough to tempt me to part with them

Great shots Steve - are you using a Nik filter on those to give them the metallic look?

And to answer the OP's question:

85.1.8 G
16-35/4 VR

Killer work, Steve.

For me, I will never part with my 200 f/2 or my 14-24.

Right now I only have one lens I'll never sell: Zeiss 100mm MP. If I had to choose another it would be my 16-35mm.

Everything else could be easily replaced if money was no option.

I don't know that I could say that I would never sell them as they could theoretically come out with a better version of both of them, but at this stage, my favourite lenses are the 24 f1.4G and 400 f2.8E FL VR because it is four lenses in one - 400mm f2.8 bare, 560mm f4 with the 1.4x TCIII, 680mm f5 with the 1.7x TCII and 800mm f5.6 with the 2x TCIII. The 400 f2.8E FL VR is just stupid sharp. I have a 3000 x 2000 pixel version of the second image below of the Kestrel and the detail is just incredible on my new 3840 x 2160 pixel Ultra HD screen. I have displayed a 1800 x 1200 pixel version here as most probably won't have a high res screen, but these new screens really show off the capability of the high res sensors and lenses.

D810 + 400 f2.8E FL VR, 1/1000sec, f5.6, ISO180

D810 + 400 f2.8E FL VR, 1/323sec, f9, ISO160

D810 + 400 f2.8E FL VR + 1.4x TCIII (560mm), 1/833sec, f8, ISO5000

D810 + 400 f2.8E FL VR + 1.4x TCIII (560mm), 1/400sec, f8, ISO800

D810 + 400 f2.8E FL VR + 1.7x TCII (680mm), 1/833sec, f5.6, ISO64

D810 + 400 f2.8E FL VR + 1.7x TCII(680mm), 1/1667sec, f8, ISO1270

D810+ 400 f2.8E FL VR + 2x TCIII (800mm), 1/833sec, f8, ISO898

D810+ 400 f2.8E FL VR + 2x TCIII (800mm), 1/1667sec, f8, ISO635

Same three for me. But if I had to pick two, it's the 200mm and 58mm

There are no two I'd never sell, all my gear is temporary. I'm sure I won't be using the Nikon system in 3 years time and improved versions of lenses get released.

Right now I can only name the the Sigma 50mm ART. I'd add the 85mnm but an ART version will arrive eventually.

My 70-200 2.8VRII, and probably my 14-28*...love my 24 1.4 as well, but the 14-24 wins by a hair.

*of course, it should go without saying that if Nikon or another company were to release a better version of these two lenses, I would definitely upgrade within reason.
