p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Which to buy D750 or D810?

I am looking for advice and help deciding which body to buy. I will be taking pictures of my grand kids, some landscapes and wildlife. I will be moving back to Colorado in hopefully 15 months. As some of you know plenty of wildlife and great scenery to take tons of pictures. I have the 24-70mm ED and the 85 f1.4D. I am looking for a good telephoto. Any suggestions?

thanks
Denny

Any of the two with preference to D750 if you are looking for light and to D810 if you need to make large prints or plan to crop a lot.

As per a telephoto (I guess for wildlife) the new Nikon AF-S 200-500mm f/5.6 seems a bargain.

+1.

I have a D750, so I may be biased, but I really prefer the size, weight and tilting screen vs the D810. I agree the D810 is preferable if you plan to make LARGE prints or regularly crop. However, I think it is important to define "LARGE". This past week, I rented a D810 and various lenses to run some tests. I shot the same scene on tripod with same lens on D750 and D810. I processed the raw files in Capture One with no modification other than Black/White Point and White Balance. I then uprez'd the files to a 20" x 30" size @ 300dpi (D750 required more uprez to achieve parity). Then I cropped the image to 16x21 (largest I can do on my Epson 3880) and printed. There was no appreciable differences in the prints. So, my conclusion is that unless I need really LARGE prints (> 20X30), the D750 certainly meets my needs.

As they say YMMV.

Good luck with your decision!

John

I have found that 24 MP is plenty for me, too. Even the APS-C 24 MP is adequate for most things, except higher ISO in low light. ISO 1600 and above can benefit from full frame.

I have a Nikon D750 and a D5300 (just upgrading that to a D5500.) I actually prefer the D5300/D5500 for most casual use. The D5300 kit is only about $400 used, (or $500 refurbished) and the depreciation will only run about $100 per year. The Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS is a little redundant with your 24-70, but it is an excellent lens on an APS-C body for only $300. DxO said taht it was the sharpest standard zoom on the D7100.

For a tele, the Nikon 70-200 4.0 VR is an excellent, basic lens. If you shoot in low light a lot, the 2.8 VR II is a necessity. I actually have both. I love the 4.0 for all around use, and I need the 2.8 for events in low light.

Then add the Sigma 150-600, Tamron 150-600, or the Nikon 200-500. And pray taht you don't get obsessed with the super teles!

I desperately miss Colorado. Enjoy!

If you don't need the resolution... Go to Best Buy and hold 'em. They're quite different in the hand. See which one feels better.

I have the D750 and the only thing I miss from the D810 is the fixed LCD. I don't really care for these articulating ones that are all the rage. They feel too easy to break. But I like the slightly smaller body and better (IMO) grip of the 750.

I have both the D800 and the D750, and I love the size of the D750. It feels much nicer in the hand. Image quality, unless you are printing massively, the D750 is more than enough. I also quite like the articulating screen, especially for landscape work.
My preference for the all rounder - the D750
