I recently got the Rokinon/Bower/Samyang 8mm f/3.5 and have been using it a decent amount at volleyball (will use it a lot for winter sports too). Hoping to pick up a 14/16mm lens soon as well. (Full disclosure, the copy I have/had was not new (and not sharp) so it's going back for a replacement).

What are you using that's not a 400/300/70-200 that you enjoy using at games?

Interesting question....

I think the most unique, non-telephoto shots I've seen are wide angle shots....mostly rigged to remote cameras in unique locations to get a different perspective.

I recently got the Nikkor 58/1.4 to work in other areas of photography and tried it on the sidelines looking to see how it's unique bokeh worked in low-light sports. This was mounted on a third body...which I normally don't use...to much to juggle.

Nothing special - but here are a few.

I've used the new Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM on my second body for Football this year. It's not ideal but it is faster than my other wide lenses. I don't have much action shots with it but I used it to shoot the Senior night festivities last week. The more I use this lens, the more I like it. Am probably going to be using it for basketball this winter.

jcnemy:

Your higher ISO is wicked sharp clean! Completely blows the Canon 7DmkII out of the water.

And after 130+ views, it appears very few use anything other than the 400/300/70-200 lenses.

I forgot to add in the orig post that I use the 85 & 50 for football and volleyball. Will also use them for basketball, gymnastics this winter.

I've liked the Nikon 135/2 for indoor high school sports. Sometimes that extra stop over a 2.8 makes all the difference, plus the 135/2 renders beautifully.

I keep an 8mm in my bag all the time, I try and find a use for it at most of the events I am at, sometimes I do, sometimes I don't,

Neat shots Andy....I like the different look and composition of those 8mm shots!

Thanks for sharing and showing what's possible!

I like a wide-ish 24mm for fan and sideline shots...rented a fish for one game, kinda fun. One game was enough.

Rented a 600mm F4 for ultimate frisbee (basically a narrow American football field - 35y wide, 70y playing field proper with 20y endzones (110y v. 120y for American football).

We have great access right up to the sideline.

I'd shot a 600mm for one weekend at a high-level 'regular season' tourney (top 8 teams in each men's, mixed and women's v. nationals with top 16 in each) and liked the results.

For Nationals, the 600 was too big. And I didn't back off.

I got some fun shots, but when it came time to get shots of particular plays (e.g. game winners, etc.) it was miss-or-miss (with a little hit thrown in to keep me coming back like a gambler with a 'system.').

I was our floater (without game / team assignments) which gave me flexibility. (I was either our best cut loose to shoot over everyone else or in a rubber room where I could do no harm - I like to think it was the former).

I want to do it again, even though I'd be better off using 400 FL.
