Aside from the D7200 would anyone suggest trying a D7000 (from a budget perspective)?

The D7000 for night sports it isn't very good and probably on par with the 3300 (output wise). For daytime sports I love the D7k, but not above ISO 5000 in the dark. If the main problem is ISO then you'll be looking at a D600 or D750. I would also consider the older 300mm f4 AF-S, great lens!

Thats is what I have found from research- that I need to stick with a 750, 800, 600 model for nt sports- leaning to the 750. Also considering the Sigma 120-300 to add after that. I have a 70-300? I think thats what it is- and I hate it- nowhere near sharp- can't hold a candle to the 70-200.

Thanks for addressing that as I own a D7000 and been quite happy with it being a great all-around camera. However, this past week I shot a drama presentation requiring me to push the ISO. I didn't like what I was getting at ISO6400, so I backed off. I was using my Sigma 17-50mm f2.8. I wish I had my primes (35 &50) with me (I lent them to a friend). Handling the D3XXX, the viewfinder alone would drive me to a D7XXX body. I guess (in my thinking), you could make some improvements in other areas with the D7000 except in the high ISO department.

The 70-300mm is known to be softer between 200-300mm but at its price point (esp. used) its a great lens. I believe that the Tamron 70-300mm is sharper on the long end but its a mute point as you shooting at f5.6 at those focal lengths. Price aside, its no contest when your using a 70-200mm.
