I will have a quick review of this lens up, tomorrow.

I recently took it for a one week spin.

the 50 1.4 is supposed to have super nervous bokeh and horrible CA
these are the main complaints from super pros.

the 50 1.8 is a great value

the 58 1.4 is a specialized tool that is NOT designed for sharpness
it's bokeh and transitions are amazing
I wish the 58 barrel was smaller, there is NO reason for the lens to be this big, when you look at the diagram.
I wish it was not so expensive, it's basically a retuned 50 1.4, put in a fat suit.
there is no reason for this lens to be a 72mm, there is so much room in this fat suit, that it could easily be a 77mm.

if you have to have 1.4 and don't want the size/weight of the sigma art, the 50 1.4g is a fine lens, as you can see in previous portraits that have been shared.

these test images are nothing sexy, obviously. it's all I could muster up, as I am extremely limited on time these days.

what you want to look at is the bokeh, the background yellow thing is a safety vest, in the first batch
the window bokeh is key here.

in the 2nd batch, the bokeh from the potato chip bag lol! crunch!
other colored bokeh, like the nikon box
window bokeh is too bright to evaluate.
both lenses destroyed the background.
no 1.8 lens shot for the 2nd batch, sorry.

again, sorry these test shots are so terrible.

Was my experience as well. Tried two, returned them both. But I think it must be sample variation as I see a bunch of other people (this thread for example) with nice images wide open. Might give it a second try...

I bought mine used, and immediately worried it wasn't that good. But I am not good with micro adjusting and wasn't sure if it was me or the lens. I need to actually test it out using live view and a tripod. The few times I have done that it seemed damn good. So I should just spend the time before I make any final judgements.

I just always use my 85 1.8G if I have the space, so I rarely find myself needing the 50mm until this past weekend when I was in a hotel room and the 85 was just a hair too long.

Thanks for the pics! I used to own the 50 1.8G in the past and liked it. More than I currently like my 1.4. I need to look at these shots on a computer, but on my phone the 1.4 and 58 looks much better than the 1.8, but pretty close together. So I can't make any actual judgements until I am on a computer screen.

when I look at them on a basic monitor, I realize how stupid these test images are.
horrible samples.

main thing you can look at is the bokeh from the potato chip bag.
the 50 1.4 has a more pronounced bokeh.

I kept buying mine new, and tried that "Dot Tune" AF-Fine tune method. Usually works fine for all my other lenses, but I could never get the 50mm 1.8's sharp, and the 1.4 focused too slow for me

Trying to find a 58mm locally today on Craigslist, but no one wants to respond to their messages lol

If I don't pick up one I'll probably give the 50's another try.

I feel the 50/1.4G is a great lens. For the size/weight and price it is great value particularly for portraits.

If you don't like the results of fine tuning the nifty fifty pairing, you won't like the 58 either as it's less sharp by a lot. Overall it may be the best of the bunch. But they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Actually the 50 1.8g may have the least amount of weaknesses! But hey - I have some sort of love for the 50 1.4g - I think MAYBE because it's such an underdog. Ha.

There's something about the rendering of the 58 that I just like, but I hope the AF is faster than the two 50s (would you know by chance?)

I'm not opposed to just the 50 1.4 though, just have to accept that it has some limitation that I need to get used to.

I have both!
the rendering is SWEET with the 58 no doubt
the 50 1.4G is not a great lens.
neither of them are perfect.
that's why I want a new lens. a 50mm 1.4E FL, sharp and beautiful bokeh, c'mon nikon!

50 1.4g...
I had it for a minute two years ago, and sold it.
got it again recently b/c I am sort of considering selling the 58 and go with 28 1.4 and 70-200 2.8, with an option to swap the zoom for my 85 1.4g, which I LOVE... and then have a 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 as my 50mm range. I would use the 50 for casual shooting/travel, as I love how small and light they both are.
so I'm in a trial phase right now.

from what I'm seeing over the past couple weeks, and for the price of around $350 or so, to get 1.4... not a bad deal right?

AF is tricky on the 58, it can not be counted on. you have to take a few shots for anything that is important, to be safe.
stay further than 5' away and it helps a great deal.

AF is not good with the 50 1.4g is not any better

1.8g has the best AF.

Thanks, you may have just convinced me to just go with the 1.8 until a 1.4E comes out

There are tons of 58 for sale in the B/S forum here. Can't hurt to try. Can always flip it.

It's an amazing piece of glass in the right hands. I don't want to deter you from trying it out.
