p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 100-400 II IQ QUESTION

Although two of them passed from my hands for testing, I hesitated to buy one. In both cases I found IQ problems related with decentered elements, resulting in one side of the image being softer compared to the other by some margin on my 5D3. I took lots of pictures with them, mostly urban landscape. Both lenses were very sharp in the center and one side of the image. The other one was softer than I could accept. Since the lens is in relatively- short supply in my country, I am thinking about giving up for now because I don't want to buy one and sent it directly to a service facility for lens elements adjustment. I know that most use it for subjects that are located in the image center (where it is extremely sharp) or with a crop camera but I am sure that some of you take pics of landscapes etc. Has anyone of you experienced similar problems with the 100-400 II on a full frame camera?

p.1 #2 · p.1 #2 · 100-400 II IQ QUESTION

No problems with my one and only 100-400L IS II that I bought on day one. I use it for all kinds of photos, including landscapes, and it's been consistently sharp across the frame on my 1DX and 6D bodies. Don't hesitate to try another one, especially if you can do a couple of test images with it before committing to buy.

I've shot quite a few with my 5d3, 1DX & 7D2, haven't seen this.... In fact (although you're asking about full frame) I shot a Spartan race last summer with over 15K images in one day. I think if there was a problem with the glass, I'd have seen it. I've shot a similar number of images with my full-frame bodies, over a longer time frame and haven't had any problems.

p.1 #4 · p.1 #4 · 100-400 II IQ QUESTION

The 100-400 II looks great across the frame on the 1Dx and 5D3 and still holds up quite well on the 5DsR. I have two copies, but have only used one seriously yet. Was the issue with the 100-400 II on the 5D3 consistent between lenses? If so, perhaps the camera mount or sensor are out of whack.

Really, I've never really looked too hard to see if I have a softer side but I've never noticed it. That said, I'm usually using the centre of the frame and cropping on birds so who knows..

p.1 #7 · p.1 #7 · 100-400 II IQ QUESTION

I had a similar problem with a 5D II and several candidate 70-200 IS IIs. Rejected two lenses for exactly the symptoms you mention, then discovered that using a different body fixed the problem. So it wasn't the lenses.

Funny thing is, that "defective" body worked perfectly with every other lens ever tried on it. Mysterious.

The first one was softer on the left side. The second on the right. So it's not the body I am using.

p.1 #9 · p.1 #9 · 100-400 II IQ QUESTION

Mine is excellent. IQ is without par short of spending 5 figures on a huge and heavy prime. IS is equally amazing.

Since getting the 100-400 II, I've not touched my 70-200 2.8 II or my 400 5.6L -- thinking of selling both. My 100 2.8L macro also gets very little use above-water.

Hope this helps!
