Nothing is going on it's just typical DxO and Canon.

Use this review as part of your due dilligence and not the only review. Based on what I've read from reputable reviews, I am seriuosly considering the 35L II.

They tested on a 5D III; and their measurements may very well be correct, but a 5Ds R will give a much clearer picture (pun fully intended) as to the performance of various lenses.

That said, what makes the 35/1.4L II special isn't *just* that it's sharp!

So what makes the 35L2 special (asks the guy who placed an order for it today)?

Rendering style, overall sharpness (it's still very sharp), and technical control of common optical faults.

As with all things, you've gotta determine if it's special enough for the price... compared to the alternatives.

With a lens like this-- given the alternatives-- buying it solely for a sharpness advantage probably isn't a wise move, because even if it was the sharpest of the bunch (which it may or may not be)-- the top few are so damn sharp that I just don't think you'll notice in the real world.

Stuff like distortion, minimum focus distance, light fall-off, size, AF speed/accuracy, CAs (of all sorts), etc, etc, differentiate the various fast 35mm lenses much more than sharpness, IMO.

At what point is a lens "sharp enough" and the gains don't translate in prints? Have we already reached that?

Depends on the print, and the crop...

1. Sharp. Only a few 35/1.4 lenses are this sharp wide-open.
2. Decent (neutral) rendering. Looks better than the 35/1.4 Art, though maybe not as good as the original 35/1.4L; generally a matter of taste.
3. Control of aberrations. It sets the standard here until say a comparable Otus appears.
4. Great AF, not something shared among many competitors.
5. Rugged, professional design with weather sealing.

Note that it's not any one thing, but rather a combination of all attributes that makes the 35/1.4L II stand out.

From the "this" link above, you can see the comparison between the images from the 1Ds3 and 5DsR here
suggesting that DxO just tested their 5D3 camera again and we learned little of the lens's performance ...
AKA If Bryan can start using the 5DsR to test lenses why can't they

Looks like an awesome lens.

The problem I have is that my 35L v1 is really good so I see no need to upgrade. I however want the 50L improved. I would buy a 50L v2 the minute it is available if it is an improvement over the current lens.

Still, nice to see Canon continuously upgrading their lens lineup.

Bad copy? This lens looks amazing wide open, sharp to the very corners at f/1.4. What more do you want?
Version I had amazing colors and rendering and if version II has the same look while being sharper and better corrected, it will be a winner.
Canon 35/2IS looks sharp/corrected enough but I never cared for its rendering/bokeh.

For a long time I wanted one of these, and if I was still in the market for a Canon 35mm f/1.4 prime I would be all over this new lens.

There has been a discussion amongst the few of us on this forum with the 35L II in regards to the rendering style. There are plenty of photos of Disney world from one user and I posted some quick portraits of you want to make up your own mind. That said, my personal opinion is that the rendering is not quite as good as the original 35L. There is something special about the original that the II just doesn't have as much of.

The II has a number of advantages though:
- super well controlled lateral CA, which makes the bokeh much more pleasant
- VERY fast AF and very sure AF. Haven't had it miss the critical focus point either.
- great contrast
- great color
- almost no distortion

The weight isn't bothersome. It feels slightly lighter than the 85L. I like the new finish on the barrel. Takes a CPL well. Love that the new hood locks into place, though that never stopped the 24-70 II hood from popping off.

I don't have more than a few brief experiences playing with a sigma 35A. From the Flickr photos I have seen and the few photos I have taken with a 35A, I can say that I prefer the rendering and bokeh of the canon

Wonder how it handles focus pulls on a DPAF-equipped DSLR or Cinema EOS camera- this lens formula looks rather much aimed and videography as well, given the much lower latitude in post that video generally has (lower resolution, lower DR) for basic corrections.
