p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Are there any advantages to uncoated lens filters?

I know that multi coatings are in general the standard for lens and lens filter manufacture, with most manufacturers particularly liking to emphasize the quality of their coatings. However, there seem to be some purposely uncoated filters from highly regarded makers. For example, many of the Singh-Ray filters are uncoated. Some Kaesemann-type polarizers in the past, while very expensive, were uncoated (even though multi coatings existed). And Tiffen, while on the less expensive side for still photography filters, have uncoated square glass filters that are often used for motion picture recording, where there seems to be little limit to the cost of gear. So, why would some makers specifically decide to construct uncoated filters?

There are no specific advantages to an un coated glass filter. The main reason they have existed or still exist is to make the filter lower cost, or to up the profit margin. For some types of filter, like solid ND filters, there is less need for coating because transmission is not a factor. But filter flare is very real, and thus a single coated or multi coated glass filter is always desirable. Plastic filters, which most graduated neutral density filters are made from, are normally not coated, and that is one reason why I own Schneider glass graduated ND filters, which are multicoated.

Uncoated filters are easy to clean and there is no coating to scratch or damage. It's not much of an advantage compared to the advantages of a MC filter.

The one advantage uncoated filters have is they produce inferior results vs an MC filter. This pays benefits when one has to tell their spouse you need a better lens because the gear you own is clearly not up to scratch.

I suppose if you want accentuated lens glare for creative purposes it might be useful.
