p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Tamron 24-70 VC or Nikon 24-70 v.1 for basketball or 17-55dx ?

I'll be using the lens for other things such as wedding / family portraits / auto photography and from that perspective from what I have gleaned on the tammy it will be fine for that sort of work.

However, I'll also be using it as a wide zoom for basketball work under the hoop.

The arena I'm shooting is top level in terms of lighting, usual settings - 1/800s, ISO1600, f/2.8

So my question is will the tammy be fast enough and accurate enough AF wise for the job?

Also, I have read that the tammy suffers from copy variation, as I live in the arse end of nowhere in Australia, returning the lens and or trying 3 copies in a shop and picking the best one isn't possible.

Finally, onion bokeh - in what circumstances will this be an issue ? I have read people say it is possible to avoid but will it be apparent shooting basketball wide open possibly with lights in the shot and crowds in the background?

BTW - it will be used on D800 or D7100, currently I'm using 80-200/2.8 AF-D and 50/1.8G for hoop work.

Thanks in advance

Andy

I would honestly go for a used Nikon 24-70 2.8, it's a stellar lens. I am all for third party glass but my experience with this particular Tammy was very underwhelming to be honest. Price difference isn't that significant after the introduction of the new VR Nikon version. The Tammy's only advantage is VC, and that shouldn't matter at those high shutter speeds.

The Nikon is a better lens in all regards IMHO.

On the other hand... I tried both when I was ready to buy. The Nikon was very nice but gave distinct cool tones to photos, the Tamron was also very nice but made photos much warmer. Given both, I opted for the Tamron. I use it on a D700 and D7000 for basketball and volleyball.

The used Nikon 24-70 2.8 were selling for about $1,050 here recently on Buy & Sell. That was before the new VR really started shipping.

We have had a huge influx of new sellers who apparently never check the history on sold items. So it may take a while to actually get down to a selling price, versus the much higher asking price you will see.

You might go through and look at all of the recent sales and present that to the sellers. When I am selling, I usually look at the last 10+ sales. I run a quick spreadsheet and note total costs with shipping, PayPal, the rating / age, etc. A pretty obvious patten usually jumps out.

Good luck!

The Tamron is only $100 more right now with a rebate and used Nikon 24-70 lenses are in the same price range. The Tokina might be a good lens and I know the build quality will be there but I still think there needs to be more price separation. Especially when the Tokina is not stabilized if I remember correctly and the Tamron is.

If your buying the lens for sports, the Nikon will AF faster. VR isn't much of a consideration for action, so I would recommend the original Nikon 24-70.

If your not shooting sports, then I would recommend the Tamron. I have owned both and used the Nikon for indoor basketball, sold it and now own the Tamron.

Well primary use is for sports as it's paid work.

A bit left field, but what about the 17-55/2.8 ?

It's DX I know but could be used on my D7000 body or on D800 in DX crop mode.

It's about the same as the 24-70 if you compare it on DX vs FX. If you have a fullframe camera, go with the 24-70. The 17-55 is only usefull if you need the 17mm on your DX camera (24mm equivalent).

Well yeah, it's not ideal but I do have a dx body and a fx body. I'm thinkin 17-55 on the D7000 rather than 24-70 on d800

I have been using a Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS on my D5300 for about 1.5 years. I love it. DxO rated it as the sharpest standard zoom on the D7100.

They are available here for $300 as a "direct import"/ grey market item from Japan, with 2 day express shipping. I purchased mine from WinTokyo. It is a bargain at that price. Mine has been a very solid, tight, high quality lens that I am not afraid to shoot wide open..

I use the Nikon 70-200 2.8 II on my D750, and the 17-50 2.8 OS on my D5300 as a "pair" at events, for the long and short end. The only problem of course is wanting the 24-70 2.8 for the D750.

I think I will just make do with a 24-120 4.0 or Sigma 24-105 4.0 instead for casual use, and keep using APS-C for the wide end at events where I need a faster lens.

I also own a Nikon 70-200 4.0 VR, because the 2.8 is a beast to lug around for more casual stuff. But the 2.8 zooms are fantastic when you need them! I very rarely use the newer Nikon 18-55 VR II collapsible kit lens as an alternative to the Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS. The 17-50 isn't as large and heavy as the 24-70 2.8. The newer 18-55 is surprisingly good for a kit lens, but it is also pretty slow when you need a faster shutter speed to avoid higher ISO's.

Picked up a 17-55/2.8 for equivalent of $512 US, I'll use that on the DX body for now and the 80-200 on the D800.

When funds allow and the new VR 24-70 becomes more available hopefully the price of the Ver. 1 will come down a little so I'll pick one up for my FX body and either keep the 17-55 or sell it and the 80-200 to fund a 70-200 VRII.

Agree, the 28-70 is a great lens but I'm concerned about the afs motor squeak/failure. I did have one last year that I got for $600 US off the buy and sell here, but yeah they seem to be more expensive than ever now for some reason.

Go for the Nikon!

I have the Tamron cause I was cheap and couldn't afford the Nikon at the time. The Tamron is nice, but doesn't focus as fast as I need it for sports and in a dusty shooting environment (rodeo), the exposed zoom barrel collects dust all too easily.

As soon as I can, I'll switch to a Nikon 24-70.

FWIW, I just picked up the Tamron, and love it. I didn't think the VR/VC would come in handy as often as it does in that range.

The VC won't help you with shooting sports at higher shutter speeds, but it certainly makes the lens much more versatile. I absolutely love mine, and don't lust for the Nikon at all.
