p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Nikon 180mm f/2.8D Dead???

Background:

A couple years back I purchased a mint Nikon 180mm f/2D here on the forums. I used the lens a handful of times and everything worked flawlessly. Had it on the shelf for a few months and I decided to sell it. My mistake was not putting it on the camera before I shipped it, but it was 100% operational the last time I used it. I sold it to a FM member and it was dead on arrival. I was perplexed at how that was even possible, and asked to try it on different cameras, make sure the aperture lock was locked at f/22 etc., and then refunded the buyer and they shipped the lens back.

Sure enough, my mint condition 180mm f/2D is dead as a doornail. F-- error on all camera bodies, nothing registers. Can this be fixed? Is it worth repairing?? I have since sold the 200/2 and wouldn't mind having this lens working again. Has anyone else had an AF-D lens just completely die unexpectedly?

Thanks,

Chris C.

This may seem incredibly stupid to suggest, but here it goes...

Did you write down the serial number of the lens you sent out to see if it's the same as the lens you now have?

In any case, I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Who knows, maybe it's an easy fix... you're close to Authorized Photo Service in the windy city, so there is 1 bright spot.

Yes, same lens. I suppose I could send it off for a quote. If it's over $150 (which I would be willing to bet it is) then it wouldn't really be worth it to me. Clean copies of this lens go for around $350 now...

OK, here's another incredibly stupid suggestion: Are you sure the aperture ring is set to "A?"

Maybe the contacts on the lens are dirty.

This would be my guess. Does the aperture tab on the back of the lens still actuate the aperture blades?

Camera was tried in all settings with no avail.

I tried wiping down the contacts, what is a safe cleaner to use on them?

Aperture tab does still more the aperture blades, nice and snappy. It would be great if the contacts just needed a good cleaning!

Thanks for the tips,

Chris

It could be dirty contacts, a malfunctioning chip, a broken electrical connection, or something mechanically wrong.

[edit] You replied before I hit submit! It sounds like you can rule out dirty contact and mechanical issues. So it could be a malfunctioning chip or a broken electrical connection.

Both internal to the lens I'm assuming..? It just blows my mind that it worked fine, then after shipping it the buyer found it dead I should have claimed damage during transit - I always pack my items very well.

Is there any electrical safe solvent to use on the lens contacts? I only wiped them with a microfiber towel.

Another stupid suggestion:

If this is an AF-D lens, are you sure the body you have can drive the AF screw? Some of the DXXXX bodies can't drive the focusing screw.

Just wanted to throw that out.

91% isopropyl alcohol works too. You can get it at Target or most any pharmacy.

Yes, tried with a D800, D600 and D5300 (would still work with this, just not AF).

I'll pick up some isopropyl alcohol tomorrow and see if that helps.

Apologies for the delayed reply. Apart from the contacts, the electronics are inside. Take a look at mikeno62 on Youtube. Look for his videos on Nikkor lenses and find one of the prime AF lenses to see what the electronics are like. The 35mm f/2 video shows how complicated the electronics get.

I couldn't get the hyperlink to work, so sorry for the long URL:

Finally picked up 91% Isopropyl Alcohol and cleaned the lens and D600 contacts, and the lens is still dead

Guess I'll ship it off to a repair center for a quote. Hardly seems worth it, I can't see it being less than $200 and that seems silly to put into a lens that, when working, is worth $300... It works as a full MF lens so maybe I'll just use it for that

I thought I have owned, rented or otherwise knew of every Nikkor lens, but this 180/2 AF or AF-D is a new one. Was it is prototype of lens that never made it?

In any case, F-- is indicative of a lens not sending the CPU info to the camera, e.g., bad contacts, processor, connections, etc.

a loose lens mount.... are all screws firm, tight, and accounted for?

Big ol' fat-finger there 😁 I didn't notice when I started the thread or revived it..whoops! Just the standard f/2.8D lens.

I hate to see this sit as a fully manual lens, but also don't know if it is worth the repair bill or not. Maybe it's somethings simple?

Has anyone ever had an AF lens chip/electronics replaced?

Yes, everything looks great. The lens looks brand new, partially why I'm so upset it just died on me.

Bummer. Might have got zapped with static electricity along the way. That can fry the "chip" in the lens.
