IMO, the best SINGLE Canon lens for using handheld shots of wildlife at varying distances.

All shots taken handheld during a couple of short walks on an overcast day today.

I completely agree about the 100-400 II, Tony, and this set is is a good example of why it's true.

I agree 100%....it is by far the best combo from Canon for easy handholding, walk-around birding...the Sigma C is another good alternative that I am going to re-visit tomorrow with the newest FW and see if it has now become useable to me with better OS VF display.

And Tony, you must have arms of steel to use those incredibly low shutter speeds; beautifully sharp, and at 560mm!

Thanks for posting these. I've also found the above combo to be more than capable of motorsports...it was my main combo this year. The AF & IQ with the 1.4TCIII was good enough that after awhile I just left it on most of the time. The expanded center point AF was fine for shooting cars & bikes, even if they were going over 150 mph.

The fact that it's also fairly lightweight (for what you get range-wise) and can be easily carried around seals the deal for me.

Even on the little 700D, the IS on the v. II ... it really does add a new realm of capability. Hand holding the 100-400 II + TC balances (imo) better than hand holding the Sigma 150-600 also (had both @ same time for about 3 months). Granted, the Sigma gets to 600 @ f/6.3, while the Canon combo gets to 560 @ f/8 ... but, for me I couldn't hold the larger glass of the Sigma (on the far end of things) as well as I can by slipping the TC next to the body. Even though the math would suggest a need for a slower shutter, the gain in my stability was greater than the 2/3 stop light loss (and offset by the IS also).

To be fair to Sigma ... I never got the dock, so the max possible gains on OS there weren't something I tried. But, shooting without the IS / OS ... big diff on how I could handle the Siggy vs. the Canon. I just figure that stability diff contributes to IS / OS use too.

I compared moonshots with each setup and found my stability was better with the Canon + TC ... and definitely no "arms of steel" here.

My 7D2 is on it's way from Canon. Good to know it has the "master" seal of approval for use with the 100-400L II.

I hope to try out a 7DII one of these days. But for now my 1DIV appeared to be doing the job on these fast water birds last month. In the mean time the new zoom and 1.4 tele are doing a satisfactory job of getting me shots I never got before. The new zoom and tele are an excellent combination when it comes to weight, price, stability, and quality.

Effective focal length of 728mm panned at IS 2..1/80th, iso 50, F13 on this shot.

It really is a nice combo ... I'm still often surprised at how nicely the 2 perform as a combo!
