I think I like the expression a little more in #2, but I was interested to see the sames subject wide open or closed down a stop.

Out of focus nose @ 1.4 is distracting imo. Why shoot this at such wide apertures and not get the face/head in focus?

What he said ^^^^^^^

The background dam near ripped my retinas off, a little darker of subtle background and raise a stop. Get that entire face in.

Very photogenic kitty. I agree, for cats/dogs shallow apertures are not the best choice unless shot from a distance. I much prefer the nose and focal plane of the eyes in focus, the whole head is even better.

F1.4 is too shallow for this type of shoot, F2.8 is better but I would try F3.5 to get the nose in focus but still have good amount of bokeh.
I agree to what John Skinner adviced, have the background darker because now it is competing with the subject for our attention.

Beautiful cat.

F1.4 all the way. Eyes are all that matters for me. Much more pleasing with the shallow depth of field.

Nose out of focus on 1.4? they are BOTH OOF. Might as well shoot at 1.4 all the way. I shoot at 1.4 97% of the time on my primes.

,love your cat's eyes! but I have been trying to figure this stuff out as well..while there is no right or wrong as people have different tastes, intentions of their subjects, etc. I was 'shooting for' my dog's whole face in focus, but even at 5.6 and 200mm it didn't happen...so next time I'll focus on her nose and maybe even go 6.3 or smaller

It is just a lot more distracting at 1.4. I'd have shot this at f/8 but then current obsession is f/1.4 with blacks-that-are-grey and lazily turning locations/context into mush.

I think a tilt shift lens so you can get both nose and eyes in focus while everything else is pretty much OOF

It all depends on how you place the elements in your photo

Example below shot at f1,2

I do like shallow DoF as much as most on this forum, but sometimes stopping down helps.

photo below at 200mm f4

Some more provocation...

I personally think there's a place for both. Not right or wrong.
