Hi,

I was wondering what primes I should get next? I used to use the 24-70mm 2.8, but it's just way too heavy. I just sold it so I can go back to shooting primes. I currently have the 50 1.8 and the 85mm 1.8g and the 70-200mm 2.8.

I'm looking to cover my wide angle sides. I love shooting landscapes and would love to get into night/astrophotography. What should I go for?

20mm, 24 or the 28mm 1.8's? If I get one of those, is there a point in getting the 35mm 1.8 fx?

Thanks!

Depends on your preferred use.

My main kit consists of a 20mm, a 55mm and a 105 or 135mm.
When you are considering astro, go for the 20mm f1,8 AF-S and don't worry whether you could have made a better choice.

The difference in FoV between a 20 or 24 and the 50 is big enough to fit a 35mm in between without feeling over-equipped.

If you love shooting landscapes you might wish to give some thought to buying one of Nikon's manual focus lenses. They're beautifully made, very reasonably priced and perform very well. Of course, they'll be most useful if you're shooting FX with a bright enough viewfinder that focusing becomes easier. If the idea tickles your fancy, you might with to check out the last few hundred pages of the Manual Focus Nikon Glass thread on this Nikon forum.

Good luck sorting it out.

Agreed there, and I figured this guy would show up.

My main kit consists of old 1970's vintage manual focus Nikkors. My 20mm, 24mm, 55mm, 105mm and 135mm combined cost me about as much as a single 20mm f1,8 AF-S would have set me back, the lenses are smaller, almost all take 52mm filters and none of them will fail any time soon due to electronic or mechanical malfunction or wear as long as I don't drop them too often.

I generally only suggest manual focus lenses to folks who appear to have the inclination and patience to dedicate some time to use these vintage gems

Would 20mm be too wide for group shots? Too much distortion?

Yes, it will noticably distort peoples features and proportions at the edges of the frame. People start looking like cardboard stand-ups with anything wider then 28mm, but with a 24 you can get away with it leaving a gap towards the edges. Not sure about other brands, but the manual focus (Ai and Ai-S in particular) Nikon 28mm lenses are the best corrected wides I used so far.

"Would 20mm be too wide for group shots? Too much distortion?"

Not necessarily. Just keep it level and don't put anyone near the edges of the frame, especially if they are calorie challenged.

Funny this comes up tonight. Earlier I was out doing a family and tried the Nikon 20mm f2.8G on a whim. They thought it came out pretty well. Definitely a different look.

As for primes vs. zooms, I switched from all f2.8 zooms to all f1.4G lenses. My camera bag is actually much heavier, my work flow is slower, and I do sometimes miss shots because I have the wrong lens on. I'm looking to pick up a used 24-70mm f2.8 for paid jobs now and going back to that. Shooting landscapes, my favorite lens is the 24mm PC -E followed by the Sigma 35m f1.4 ART. Things aren't hurried, compared to family portraits and weddings. As for the older AiS lenses, I have 28/50/105mm but I ONLY use them on my c.1983 F3/T. They just don't deliver for me on the D800E.

I did buy the Nikon 20mm f1.8G for astro photography as it seems to be the fastest and sharpest out there right now. At least, until we get solid reviews on the new Sigma 20mm f1.4 ART anyway.

i pretty much only take pictures of people. Zero landscape. on the wide-ish side, i use the 35mm fx. I had the 24m 1.4, but sold it because it was generally too wide for my people pictures. I also had a 28mm, but just liked the sharpness of the 35mm more.

a 20mm for astro/landscape and a 35mm for regular would be a nice combo. Otherwise, I'd get a 24mm.

You have the 35mm 1.8 or 1.4?

Depends on what you shoot. I agree with most comments here, adding the following:

I would group 20/24mm together, then consider a 35mm. Makes a nice 20 (or 24) - 35 - 50 - 85 prime set. If you want only one lens below the 50mm then I would say the 28mm merits consideration, it a nice "balanced" focal length between the really wides and 35mm. For landscape uses, I'd say any of the Nikon f1.8 AFS lenses would be great.

An old film era suggestion, when zooms were not quite high IQ, was to approximately double the FL to have coverage with the least lenses. So if you started at 24mm, then 50mm, then 100mm, then 200mm. Not quite so clean at the wide end as each drop in mm can have a huge difference, but than I couldn't afford anything below 24mm back then anyway.

Lastly, for group shots, if you use a high MP body, the 20mm can be cropped a little and still provide useful files. Just keep people away from the edges of the frame, and keep the body level.

Well, let's see...you want to replace a 24-70 with primes. Logic says but the following; 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm (which you already have and maybe an 85mm since there is no 70mm prime.

1.8. Had the sigma 1.4 and sold it because of size and weight

I also sold and re-bought a Zeiss 35mm f2

My concept: a 24mm, 50mm, and 105 Micro.

That would cover a whole lot with just three lenses.

I just got the 35mm f/2.0D and I already love it for portraiture. My Nikon primes are:

35mm f/1.8G DX
35mm f/2.0D
50mm f/1.8G
85mm f/1.4D
105mm f/2.8G VR

I have the 28/1.8G, use it on FF = 28mm, 1.2x crop mode = 34mm, 1.5x crop mode = 42mm, takes me nicely up to my 50/1.8G and so on.

But I also have a nikkor 28mm f3.5 H.C. that was 70 bucks that I prefer to use when I don't need AF

What I found out was a bag full of single lenses actually weighs more than the zoom they replace.

I have 20, 35 and 85 1.8 primes and find them to be a well balanced set. I have 50 1.4D and 28 2.8 AIS if I choose to add them. I use this mainly as my landscape set up with a D800e.

I like primes, but, the 24-70 has been my goto lens since it was released. IMO, it is Nikon's best event/family lens, whether pro or amateur shooter.

I find the zoom vs prime has caused many of us to make rash decisions. There is room for both in a well thought out kit. A kit that is not well thought out is an expensive habit.
