...and it's a nice upgrade. It does have both Master/Slave modes, and it's about 3/8" less tall than its predecessor, for whatever reason. Comes with both a (stofen-type) diffuser, and a warming filter (both clip-on, the latter is colored plastic rather than a gel+holder). They did change both the menus and control buttons a bit compared to the 600EX-RT; too soon to render judgment, although I tend to like it when similar things have similar menus. Linked right up with the ST-E3-RT, just like its bigger brother(s).

Definitely a worthy upgrade if you're looking to, and would make a nice first flash for someone starting out.

I have three of the 600's but wish I had three of the new430's. I loved their size and with the ISO capabilities of these new cameras you don't need a super powerful flash anymore.

Unless you're shooting backlit group portraits in full sunlight, esp. with any sort of light modifier...

Yes, it can be configured as either Master or Slave in radio mode, not optical (just confirmed that the Master function works).

yeah that was the thing that got a bit mixed up when they announced it .

It has master & slave capability in radio mode but only slave using the older optical system .

That's great; I can use my 600's for off camera reception lighting and have the 430 control these then? Could use an ST-E3 too but now I have some fill or bounce flash on me if needed too. Gonna love this...

So I can use this to be the master and control my 600ex rt in radio mode, not that optical unreliable nonsense?

I disagree with the poster above who stated we don't need high power flash guns with the high Iso capabilities of newer cameras, but the large selling point for me would be that I could have an on camera CANON brand master, AF assist light, that controls the off camera flashes.

Thanks, it didn't even occur to me to check optical since I no longer use it. Such a PITA when outside in sunlight...

Optical sucks... good to hear the 430III can be a master in radio mode.

I'd love one. I have 3 x 600's. If I'm shooting an event and decide to have additional lighting I keep one on the cam to transmit, use it for the AF assist beam and still bounce it if I can. Something smaller would be great and would give me a third off camera flash. I don't use my ST-E3 for the above reasons for that type of shooting.

Just did some initial unpacking and testing. Holy smack, it's small and light....controls work different than 600 and needs to get used to a bit, but as far as I can tell it does everything I need.

I think that's what it is on the smaller flashes instead of the red projected grid of the 550/580/600.

Looks like IR AF assist should work as it works on 600 ex or 580

AF assist can be turned off in camera, so make sure its allowed.

From the referenced Page 22:

"The AF-assist beam, which uses a series of small flashes, is emitted..."
