Gear envy? I don't get why people insist on showing up with totally different kind of gear for a specific thread just to go "ha! see, mine is just as good and i only paid xx for it"

Get over yourself, its not about you.

The 400 can do baseball too. Two with the 2.0x III (first 2) and 2 without.

I debated long and hard between the 400 and 600 when I was in the market to upgrade from the 500 last year. I shoot lots of football, but wildlife is my passion. I figured I could get the 400 and use TCs to get more reach, but ultimately decided that I did not want to be reliant on TCs to get the longer focal length, plus wildlife was is the priority, so 600 won out. however, I do use the 600 for football and I'm glad I did go this route as I can get those really nice crisp tight shots and don't have to hover around the sidelines with all the other nuts. The other aspect was I already have the 300 2.8 and that does the same as the 400, except it's 100mm shorter, so I end up using the 7D2 to get some reach as it's to short for the FF.

I do love the images the 400 can produce in sports at 2.8. I could sell the 300, 400 5.6 and a body or 2 and get this bad boy. Uhmmm, got me thinking.

Methodical. I too hesitated before getting the 400. I thought 500 or 600, but here are couple of reasons those choices did not work for me at that time. f4 mostly will not work for HS football / soccer fields. Many nights I am at 2.8, 1/500 and ISO 8000+. And while it's cool to be able to shoot from a distance and avoid the crowds on the sidelines, I find myself getting a bit lazy even with the 400 and think the 600 would compound that. Sometimes, you just gotta be at or near the line of scrimmage to get the shot. And lastly, most stadiums are lit better from the sides, so shooting from the end zones can be even more difficult lighting wise. But, I'd still love to get the 600 for wildlife.

First time out with my new 400 after upgrading from a 300. Time to get 2x extenders for my surf/motorsports work.

Out of all the Canon 400mm f/2.8 lenses, has anyone owned more than one and what are the IQ &/or focus speed differences between them?

I used to have 400 f/2.8 IS MkI before I got the MkII.

* IQ is very similar, hard to tell them apart.
* MkII AF drive is noticeably faster to the point of feeling "nervous". I preferred a more "controlled" and a bit slower AF drive response of the MkI.
* With the extenders, the gap between those two lens versions widens: the MkII performs better IQ wise and AF wise.

If the MkI weight does not pose a hindrance to your photography, I'd advise against the upgrading to the MkII.

Would you have the same opinion about 600mm F4 L IS the 1st. version?

Not quite: not only that 600 II is much lighter than 600 I, and it is handholdable too, I believe the new lens is also a fair bit sharper than 600 MkI, and its IQ at 1200mm is still excellent, at least it is so with 2xTC MkIII.

Lets resurrect this thread!

Here's s'more surfing with the 400/2.8 IS. First three are taken with a recently purchased 2X III. I almost pulled the trigger on a version II extender but figured AF speed would be priority.

That last one is crazy good There's a small dust bunny just behind the wing of the right plane, so you might want to fix that.
