Not entirely true... And look at the flat light right there. If it's a side-light, I would understand.

Do you have a picture of this set-up? It sounds interesting but I can't picture it in my mind.

As for the RRS system, both Sunwayfoto and Hejnar Photo offer the same thing at much lower cost.

No, I don't have a picture. RRS has a very similar product that is more expensive called the VRA-15, which is a little handier but a bit more expensive. They have a video of it at this link:

http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/Shop/Video-Support/VRA-15-Video-Rod-Adapter.html

It should give you an idea of what it would look like. For the Otus you would want longer rails than in the video and you can get a set of 10 inch carbon fibre ones for $40 so they are not expensive or that heavy. Then you just need to add the lens support of your choosing. For video the RRS option may be worth the extra price, but for this long lens support I think the Red Rock option is better as you could use smaller and lighter RRS clamps, and it is cheaper.

So it's pretty much like this?

Yeah, that is a lens support for the 15mm rods. It is on a much bigger base to attach to a fluid head, but you can use the one I linked above to attach the 15mm rod system to an Arca Swiss plate based head.

I hadn't seen the VRA-15 yet, that's a very smart design.

The 3D-ness of this shot is palpable, the level I have not seen anywhere before. Taken from Lloyd's blog:

His latest Yellow Aspen Lundy Canyon looks very good at 1.4 across the frame.

I would not call this a flat light. There is definitely strong presence of light, both directional and bounced, adding to the 3D ness. However, I agree that not every lens can draw this so strong. Even just the dof alone is not something you can get from any lens. I too was impressed with that particular shot,

I shot it on Thursday.Just a few stupid shots in an exhibition hall. I don't remember being as hugely impressed with a lens.

Yeah, this is just absurd. Literally absurd. If this is what it takes to build a high performance 28/1.4, sign me up for, like, a 28/5.6.

The photo actually doesn't make it justice. It's even bigger than it looks!

Really envious!!!
Did you give it back?
What are your initial thoughts on the rendering? Like the Otus 55?

Wayne, Pascal gives it a brief writeup on DearSusan , with a few shots. That one, we weren't allowed to take outside. My own take is that it has the most insane 3D I have yet to see, combining tremendous precision with a delicate rendering. Almost a combination of opposites.
That said, as Pascal puts, it, that baby has been well fed, it is one large and heavy lens!
One of my few decent shots. It is a 50% crop... and another one, just to show a 100% crop.DearSusan

Thanks for the link Philippe!
Was that statue image shot wide open?
Really excited about this lens!
Karl, could be the ultimate Zeiss!
Ming showed how incredibly sharp this lens is across the whole frame wide open. Just trying to get a handle on how the bokeh is, but I assume it is just like the 55.
