p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · The 1 thing that really annoys me about the D7000

Using a D7000 as a 2nd body, (D800 is main body) love the files, have reprogrammed the AE-L button as the AF-ON for back button focus but do you know what annoys me most ?

No 100% view with centre OK button to check critical focus. I had never thought it would be an issue, when people complained about it I thought "yeah whatever, just press and hold the "+" button then the "-" button twice to get to 100% but now that I'm shooting more sports etc. it really bloody annoys me

AFAIK, there is no solution is there ? no way of reprogramming another button to do it ?

BTW - I'm shooting both at basketball games so I can't just shoot the D800 in crop mode.

Cheers

Andy

I know what you mean. That and inconsistent AF drove me to the D7200. The 7200 is pretty much everything I wish the d7000 had been except for burst rate. No denying though the D7000 takes beautiful pics...really nice sensor. It's a heck of a body, especially at its current price.

So the D7200 has the 100% one touch thingy ?

The D7k I'm using is actually my daughters that I have borrowed for "evaluation" ...... for 3 months but may well be persuaded by the D7200 when the time comes funds permitting.

Unless the D400 is out by then

D7100 will allow the center button to zoom to 100%. Used they are pretty cheap right now and I would be surprised if Nikon didn't unload D7100s (refurbished or otherwise) on Black Friday this year like they did D7000s last year. I find the D7000 to D7100 jump pretty substantial, though I haven't heard anyone raving about upgrading from a D7100 to a D7200... On paper, it looks like a nominal "upgrade". Food for thought.

Yes this, and the non lockable command dial was biggest problem with the D7000. More than once I had a shot ruined coz the mode changed from Aperture priority to something else without me knowing. I now have a D7200 and its significantly better than the D7000 in every area that is important to me.

Thanks bud, I don't live in the US though, I'm in Oz. I can get the 7200 new, non grey import for $1148 AUS which is about $900 US but I'll check out prices of the 7100.

Workaround for the D7K/D600/D610's lack of 100% crop is easy.
On review hit + button 5X...now roll the thumbwheel and scroll thru
your 100% crops. Obviously easier when you use single AF point as
they'll all be pretty much centered in the LCD. Been doin' this for 5 yrs
and really doesn't bother me any more. Besides, I probably check the
histos more than whether I nailed the shot or not, I don't miss much.

Hang on Will, I thought you didn't miss anything

but yeah, I always use single centre AF point (don't trust them fancy 3D tracking group pointy things ) so that's an option

Actually Will i am surprised you would ever need to zoom in at all. That is quite perplexing

To add for the D600/D610, you can use the "Select faces" feature to have the camera automatically center on any faces in the image during playback, which is incredibly useful when verifying focus in the field. I believe Nikon introduced this feature after the D7000.

Yeah, but you have to hit it 5x

The 1x 100% magnification view my only major requirement when looking for new cameras. It is a dealbreaker for me

Rather than hit it 5x I press and hold, and then hit minus twice.
