Canon 100-400 II shows its sharp bite on micro adjusted 5DIII. Also shows why you don't argue with male lions, with amazing tongue structure detail. Shot near Kruger National Park. Hope this qualifies as Canon gear and not in wildlife section. If significant objection, I'll move it there. Full image of 100% crop would be 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall.

Nice shot, Don. What was the distance between you and the Kitty? I presume you were still in the vehicle...

I'd love to move out of the vehicle to avoid that %&# branch! Shot at 400mm, f8, about 40-45 feet from the lion.

Have you tried the 5DsR on the lions? I'm planning to use one on my next trip to Africa. (Of course I'm also bringing two 1DX bodies and a 5D III, etc.)

why would you need a 5d3, a 5dsr, and 2 1dx bodies for one trip? only once have I had a camera fail where I truly needed my backup body. So, I am just curious, why would you want to lug all of that gear to Africa? and we haven't even mentioned lenses yet.

I never ever want to get that close to a lion's mouth again!

And it looks to me like 5DS resolution wouldn't be necessary, or desired, in this case.

Willy V: why would you need a 5d3, a 5dsr, and 2 1dx bodies for one trip? only once have I had a camera fail

At a minimum, you need one wider angle and one long zoom, each mounted on its own body, to avoid dust while changing lenses. Dust is such a terible problem - I had a older Canon shutter button jam up and made the body not useable. I mount a 100-400 and a 500 prime, so I could use a third body for normal to wide angle.

As far as backup lenses, I had a 100-400 jam and lock up at day 11 of a 19 day African safari; became totally un-usable. And that lock up wasn't due to dust, it was the bearings inside the lens. Fortunately, I carried a 300 prime as a back up and was SO glad I did so. On a more budget trip, maybe one body and several lenses will do, but not on a long expensive African safari.

EB-1: I don't have a 5DsR to try, but I'd rather have faster frame rate (1Dx) than more resolution.

When I looked at the tongue I thought it was Beldar Conehead's mouth at first. Nice. I do a lot of cropping with my 7D2 but have not tried it on my 5D3 yet.

It's like the lion's saying, "Put your head in here. I dare you. Come on, please... "

When you invest that much time and MONEY to go on a "trip of a lifetime", you want to lug as much camera gears as possible as you can never bring all you want to. There are many times on safari where you roll upon a scene quickly and don't have the right lens mounted and miss shots

For some, bringing one body is all they want. For me and many others, at least 2 bodies is the bare minimum.

Great shot. I love looking at those pathetic looking lower incisors and canine next to those massive fangs!! The 100-400II is an amazing lens...I often wonder why I keep my expensive and heavy 200-400 around when I see the IQ from the 1-4II....however, the 2-4 has other peerless benefits so both have their place in my arsenal

Still, the v1 on a 5D2 is no slouch either:

Guaranteed no branches! Comes free with the lens!

In the end I must admit defeat though. I'll inform mrs Gregoire that I need a new lens

We are going to Tanzania next year and I plan on taking my 7D2 with 100-400 II and my 5D3 with (probably) 24-105 (only just got it second hand and not totally sure how good a copy it is). Not taking the 1DX as (1. at the moment I have a lot of problems with its sensor getting fouled 2. that means a second charger etc whereas the 7D2/5D3 share the same battery I'll also take of the battery grip to save weight/space for internal carry-on.

I'll start another thread about what I should do for my upcoming trip. Four bodies and two lenses capable of 400mm+ are a minimum, however.

Be looking forward to that thread. Especially how you get all that gear there. I remember Don Clary saying he bought an extra airline seat for some of his gear. I agree with the concept of having at least two active bodies and you can never have enough spares. But, logistics ...

the major issue will be with weight allowances on the flights....

Get a private tour safari - no strangers. Pricewise is not too much of a difference if you choose the right outfitter - the one's with shinny catalogues and office all over the world have to pay for their upfront costs...

Yes, one camera per lens, if you can swing it - dust is everywhere and plentiful. Carrying extra lens and bodies in the 4x4 is not an issue if you have it just for yourself and better-half.

Think about on-board support - either gearhead clamp or the inexpensive local bean bag

..and a wide angle for the landscapes, not to mention a dedicated prime for stars and a walk -around zoom ( high quality P&S works too)

I never thought of the dust issue, makes sense though. I always travel with 2 bodies... 4 seemed like a lot.
