Thanks Harold ! I have never seen a mantis with eyes like that, do you think it may be a nymph (if that's the right word) ?

I did a bit of searching and found a great variety of eyes in Australian mantids. Nymph is the correct term, as they don't pupate. It looks like an adult to me.

Things to note are that the wings don't quite reach the tip of the abdomen and the white bands on the front legs. How flat is the thorax (rather than more cylindrical)? The flat ones are a separate group.

aha ! i think it is a Snake Mantid, Kongobatha diademata Hebard. Family Iridopterygidae.
