Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a D700 (my first ever FX camera) and I'm debating between buying a 85mm 1.4D or a 50mm.

Would the 85mm focal length still be too long on a FX camera to be a primary walk around lens and shoot close up shots of things such as food with? I'm assuming that the focal length would be similar to that of a 50mm on a crop sensor.

Thanks ahead of time for the responses!

It all depends on you and your style. If 50Mm on DX is too long, 85 on FX will be too long.

Really, for a walk around setup and taking close ups of food?

You think he needs a 200-400/4 too?

Sigma 50mm F/1.4 EX DG is a great choice to. I am not sure if it will suffice on the walk around criteria when you need a longer reach. For walk around you may be better off with a zoom lens like the Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 which is not too heavy but quite sharp.
