I'm testing out a D3X (waiting on new battery ), and liking what little I've seen of it so far. It kinda seems like the spec of a D750 on a "real body", but without the feature of the tilting display.

The ability to have some nice color / detail at 24MP / 14-bit or switching over to DX and 12-bit for 7 FPS makes it seem like it's a Boy Scout motto of "Be Prepared" ranging from "one for slow, one for go" in a single body. While it is a bit larger than some, it does still seem to have a decent feel to it. Will know more once I get a battery and can actually go shoot with some different glass, etc.

My question is this: What other camera would you mate with the D3X for a pairing, and why? As to my shooting style, I'm a generalist (rather than a specialist) that looks to cover the bases ... never knowing what tomorrow will bring.

While no single camera can cover all the bases as being the best @ everything ... augment / expanding from the range of the D3X, one might consider these areas.

More MP / Detail
More FPS
More ISO / DR
More Responsive
Other

I'm feeling a tug toward Nikon, but before I commit to begin a retooling, I want to get my game plan in order first.

Two bodies that share the same pro build/layout:
D810 for MP/DR/IQ
D4S for FPS/ISO

I use a D3/D800E combo and I'm happy with the pair.

D3X + D7100 is my current pairing. DX with kit zoom is great for high mobility and casual situations, but I can also attach the 17-55/2.8 for serious photoshoots. While the control layout is different, they have much in common: 24MP, 51-pt AF, menu structure, support for screwdrive lenses.

I pair my D3X with a Nikon D7000. D7000 takes care with cropped telephoto shots and it also has great hi iso uses as well. As for the image quality, D7000 has it's own look. I have tried the D750 as well and I would recommend it as a compliment to the D3X, however I still stuck to the D3X for the base iso IQ, it's that great to me. Regardless how old the D3X is, I'm still amazed by it's images without post processing:

Also looking forward to see images from your D3X.
