I managed to position myself way out in a totally dark and wide open area of Canyonlands tonight. Climbed up on a small sandstone dome and waited. Not a person or a light anywhere. I was actually more impressed with this initial moon rise than the total eclipse, although that was something to see also. So, I liked this image, although I have several blood moons too! Thanks for looking!

That is a fantastic photo. I am here in Florida and there was too much cloud cover to see the eclipse. Thank you for sharing.

Nice shot! Agree with launching's comments on the light patch at the bottom (it draws the eyes toward it)--recommend cropping it and see what effect it has on the photo.

Nice! A friend and I also ventured out into the lonely desert to catch that moonrise. I couldn't think of a better way to experience such an event. No sounds and no wind. Just an incredible silent show all to ourselves. I had the thought of who else may be watching from a place like Arches and Canyonlands. Thanks for posting!

I couldn't help but think of Luke Skywalker watching the binary sunset on Tattooine . . .

Hey Craig,

What a super cool shot of this super moon! You really came away with something special.

And how nice it had to have been to have had that solitude. For me it was the exact opposite, 50 cars backed up trying to get into Joshua Tree where normally there is none on a Sunday evening. Once I found my spot it was constant cars going back and forth on the road, people blaring their music, lights shining all over... sigh... a little solitude would have been great, so glad you could enjoy yours. Not to say I didn't have fun still because I did, but it was sure different then yours.

Great capture, Craig! Love the simplicity, muted, understated foreground, and the blue-yellow contrast.

Very cool photo! I like the composition.
Unfortunately, it was very cloudy at our area so no picture of the blood moon for me.

Craig: Excellent! It reflects both the solitude and the ancient grandeur of the evening.

Thanks very much guys!

The gray patch I purposely left in as I felt it was an integral part of the scene. Thanks for the idea however.

It's funny, it was dead quiet... until close to the total eclipse. Then, in the pitch black, there was a lot of movement and rustling all around me. It could have been 1/4 mile away though for all I know. It's a little different than camping as you wait, without any light, in the complete darkness. I did get hit in the head by something, and afterwards assumed it was a bat. That will make you jump a bit!

Awesome shot of this spectacle. Over here in eastern PA the moon was obscured by clouds for the majority of its rise and eclipse time. I did get a few solid glimpses though every now and then.

Being alone in this setting, though, must have been amazing.

And, lol @ the bat running into you. That might have been enough to send me packing
