p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Tylopilus felleus, a Bitter Disappointment

During a search for mushrooms in our local woods, I though I had found one for dinner, one of the edible Boletus. I didn't have my camera with me so I picked it to take home.

Looking at the stem, I saw a coarse network of raised sculpturing. At least it was going to be a good photographic subject. The species was the Bitter Bolete Tylopilus felleus, not edible due to its bitter flavour.

I placed the whole mushroom on a wooden bench and took some photos. For the close-ups at 2:1 I used my Printing Nikkor setup* with triple flash. Fro the whole-mushroom shots I detached the two small flash guns and placed them, on their individual stands, on either side.

I have posted two images of the tubes as, even at f11, the undulations do not allow the whole field to be sharp. Each shows different detail as sharp.

The salmon-coloured bruising in the fifth image is diagnostic.

*The setup is shown in the last image of this set.

One of the more conventional view and one of the Nikkor standard setup.

The foil around the diffuser prevents loss of light away from the subject. The two small flash units can each be vertical or at 45%, in relation to their plastic "feet". They can also be detached and freestanding on the feet.

Each of the three flash guns is mounted via a ball and socket joint.

Thanks, Brian.

I think the aesthetics of this kind of subjects is a very individual matter. I have no idea what the function of the stem sculpturing is but one school of thought is that natural form evolved for function = beauty.

Interesting. What function would the structure serve - but there is more to nature than function, even if only in the eye of the beholder.

Nice textures on the mushroom. Your rig looks really heavy.
