It's no secret to most here that Canon have made big improvements with most of their MKII lenses.
Personally I have tried Zeiss 35 f2, Sigma 35 f1.4, Samyang 35 f1.4 and the Canon 35 f2IS.
The one i still have is the 35 f2IS, performance, features and price made me keep this one over all others.

Canon doing so good with their latest lens releases is making lots of people unhappy.

I'm interested in the VC.

I'll happily give up weather sealing, weight, and image stabilization.

I want optically excellent and smallish (f/2, but emphasis on image quality).

Get an EOS-M with the 22/2.

Close as you're gonna get, anywhere .

For now my 5d2 and A7rII w/ 35L and 28mm f/2, respectively, are doing the job. But I'm holding out hope.

I have considered the different available options of 35mm, restricting at the end the choice between the Art 1.4 and the Canon 2 IS. I got the Art few weeks ago because I prefer 1.4 over IS.
Here in Australia the prices are pretty much the same for the two sold at around 780 Aud (equivalent to 550 Usd) with the 35 1.4L II priced at 2,500 Aud (1,750 equiv Usd). For 3x the money the new canon ii has to be significantly better in terms of IQ to justify the purchase/upgrade for a non professional.

But Tamron ticks a lot of boxes, especially since it also has 0.4x mag at mfd and only costs $599. However, I think I'm going to get the 45mm.

Sigma doing so good with their recent lens releases probably made a lot of people in Canon unhappy, having to allocate those millions of yen R&D to overhauling the old reliable money-makers instead of milking them for another five years.

So everyone wins except the execs. All's good!

My two thoughts on this. Can you afford the Canon? If so, you shouldn't even be looking at Sigma.

Biggest difference between the two: auto focus speed. Are you shooting events where quick focus and accurate focus is important? Canon no question.

I owned the Sigma 35. It was beautifully sharp - when it focused.

To me it's just no comparison. The Canon v2 is the best auto focusing 35mm 1.4 ever made. Period.

I own the 35L II, the 35F2 and now the 45 Tamron 1.8VC
- I'm a 5DSR and 1DX owner - I only shoot IS lenses on the 5DSR
- the 35L II is fantastic on the 1DX II at every AF pt at 1/60 at F1.4 across the entire frame
- you need to shoot it at 1/125 on the 5DSR if you want to be tack sharp - even then good technique is important
- the 35F2 is a great lens - it is sharp in the center at F2, acceptable mid frame and softer in the corners - but at F2.2, close to 80% of the image has good sharpness - and looks very good on the 5DSR - plus it is a nice light setup - and, I think the IS is EXCELLENT - it is really amazing to have on the 5DSR and makes shooting at F2.2 at any shutter speed easy
- I'm on my 2nd copy of the Tamron - the 1st copy had a defective IS - it basically didn't work
- The IS on the Tamron, at least the 45 is not as good as the 35F2 IS where it really helps hold that lens from moving - I would say it is a good 3 stops - whereas the Tamron is more like 2 stops - so in some ways that almost makes the 35F2 similar the the Tamron 35 1.8

all three are good

The Canon 35mm F2 IS has coma in night shots
that would be the weakness of the lens
but other than the coma it is good

Love my 35mm f2 IS. One of the best recent Canon lenses. Light, sharp, and with top-notch IS, and (now) reasonably priced.

I currently have a 35/1.4 mk2 and 5Dsr on loan from canon, lets see what they can do. Might be able to meet up with a sigma 35 art owner also

Another point that should be mentioned is that the Canon is weather-sealed and the Sigma is not. If one uses the lens for outdoor landscapes I would strongly consider the Canon over the Sigma.

Actually, most lens makers seem to be doing pretty good. Tamron's latest lenses are excellent. Even Samsung had some excellent lenses when they were in the game. Sony's latest lenses seem to be pretty good too. Nikon probably had a mixed bag recently.

It would be interesting to see what Canon can do with their new 50, 85 and 135. Will they be able to beat Sigma and Zeiss?

Canon 35 f/1.4 Mk II vs Sigma 35 f/1.4 Art on the-digital-picture

In terms of sharpness, the Canon is indeed slightly better but I doubt you'd see it much in real life. However, the micro contrast I find certainly better IRL, as well as flare and CA control. Then, of course, there's the focus where Canon runs circles around the Sigma. And a better build quality, sealing and service.

I've had the Sigma for more than a year (had to sent it back twice due to broken AF motor and an issue with aperture control) and probably have shot over 25.000 images with it (events, weddings, etc.) but I'm happy I'm using the Canon now.

Speaking of autofocus... I have to point out that my Canon 24/1.4L II is the least reliable of my lenses in this regard. Sometimes when I'm using it indoors in mixed/iffy light (just where one would think this lens would've had the most utility) the accuracy drops dramatically and sometimes I'm getting strings of OOF images. Yes, I know how to move the AF point around. So it can't be all due to the Sigma curse or whatnot. Since the 24 is my only f/1.4 lens, I'm sometimes wondering if they're all similarly afflicted? (a silly thought, I know).

At any rate, after one indoor shoot where I was happily using the 16-35/4 for at least 1000 shots - and then the batteries in the flash blew out, so I had to switch to the backup 24/1.4 and use available light - I would swear off using fast lenses for shooting people. It's tempting to set the aperture to f/1.8 and keep firing, but when I was sorting the photos, a lot of them had not nearly enough DOF to keep even two (let alone three) people reasonably in focus. But I digress...
