p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon 1ds Mark III and lenses

I recently purchased a consigned Canon 1dsMark III. My question: I purchased this camera to use on a canon 200/f1.8 and a Canon 135/2.0. At f1.8 on the 200 and at f2.0 on the 135 the camera leaves an white overexposed line across the top of the picture. When I move the aperture up it goes away. Can you offer any thoughts on what is happening with this? Is the camera out of sync or something else? The camera works fine otherwise but losing the ability to use these two lenses to their max is certainly frustrating. Anyone else hear of this problem? Thanks. Dave Bell/pinedale

It sounds like maybe a sticking shutter....may need to send to Canon to have checked.

Sounds like a shutter problem where the second shutter blade is hanging open briefly at the end of its travel. This issue is more visible at faster shutter speeds needed for proper exposure at the wider apertures in use. It would become less noticeable as slower shutter speeds are used.

Can you post example photos with EXIF data taken at different shutter speeds at one stop increments?

Shutter sounds right. Maybe it's a touch of "shutter bounce" on the second curtain.

I am reminded of one of my F1 film cameras having a shutter bounce issue many years ago.

Definitely needs a new shutter. Not uncommon at all. Not too expensive but not cheap either.

I've seen where the shutter blades twisted and bent under another...leaving a nasty gouge on the AA filter. Also saw another where the little rivet that holds the blade to the actuator arm popped and left a nasty ding on the AA.

Testing is done! Time for repair.

I agree with others -- don't take another shot without replacing the shutter.

You may want to talk to the seller about the problem, since it was present when you go the body.

I have the same problem on my 1Ds III. I searched internet and it's called "shutter bounce". This occurs when you shoot large f-stop (f2.0 in your case) with high shutter speed. I heard to replace this shutter, it will cost probably $400.
I haven't sent mine to replace yet since now i shoot wider frame and crop later.

Dying shutter. Never saw it in my 5D series - I've owned 2 Mark I's, 1 Mark II, and 3 Mark IIIs - yet this happened with 3 1-series (1dsII and III). Don't understand that at all.

Thanks everybody. The shop I purchased it from is standing by the camera and sending it into Canon for repair. It will be no charge to me. There was no hesitation or waffling by this business. They just took care of it. Anybody who wants the name of this business send me a PM. Really impressed with these guys.

Good to hear, but really no more than you should expect from a reputable company

FWIW I love my 1Ds3, it's still my go-to camera at 800 ISO and under
