I have had both and kept the Nikon 70-200 F4. I've shot weddings with this lens and it's a fantastic, sharp lens. Sure it would be nice if it was F2.8 but it was much better than the Tamron and another big difference for me at least.........

Tamron 70-200 F2.8 = YES FOCUS BREATHING
Nikon 70-200 F4 = NO FOCUS BREATHING

The Nikon actually goes to 200mm where as the Tamron is like 183mm or something.
Plus you can use the Nikon extenders on the Nikon but not the Tamron.

* I'm not a Tamron basher.........I have 3 of their lenses. Just like the Nikon much better in this case

I once tried both the Nikkor f4 and the Tamron f2.8 at a local store. I tried them inside the store, zooming and moving around, focusing on different things. Then, I went outside and tried them, as well. I stood on the side of the street, shooting at oncoming traffic. I found the Tamron focused quicker and more accurately, with less hunting, than the Nikkor. Considering there was a $100 rebate at that time on the Tamron (as there is currently), and it came with a tripod foot, which the Nikkor lacked, it was an easy decision, FOR ME. It may not be for someone else.

My advice to you

Rent it with the option to buy. OR, go to a camera store and throw it on the body and take a few shots. I'm sure you'll be happy with this.

Can't go wrong either way. Both are capable of delivering the goods. I bought the Tamron because I had a specific need for the 2.8, more than a specific need for smaller and lighter. If not for needing the 2.8 specifically I would have went for smaller and lighter. If business is good this next year I'll buy the Nikon F4 too...

I have not used the Nikon but have the Tamron for the last 2 months or more. I love it. No desire at all to try out anything else. Highly recommend it.
